Apple did a superb job with its new Fast User Switching feature in Panther (Mac OS X 10.3), but for users with long names, the associated menu item is a terrible waste of precious Menu Bar real estate.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could access the feature through a compact, icon-sized Menu Bar icon? WinSwitch does exactly that, closely matching the performance and style of the Apple-provided menu, but without all the bulk. In fact, it even corrects some problems with Apple's menu by eliminating certain "daemon" users which shouldn't show up in the list, and by improving the alignment of user icons in the menu. WinSwitch gives you rapid access to the Accounts preference pane, and is completely customizable, allowing you to choose from four different menu bar styles: Standard icon, User picture, Full username and Short username.

- Danish localization by Jesper Juul Keller.
- Fix installation bug (the "Activate WinSwitch" command did not have its execute permissions set).
- "Show" submenu provides option to include root user in the list of users (note that in order to log in as the root user you must use the Apple's NetInfo Manager application to activate the root account and set an appropriate password for it).
- Match Apple behaviour of showing non-local users if and only if they are logged in on the current machine.
- Correctly handle unlikely case where no long username is defined in the NetInfo database.
- Ongoing improvements to source code for readability.
- Tweak to activation script: wait a few seconds and retry activation on a slow or heavily loaded machine.
- Expanded online documentation; additional useful information now appears on the new FAQ page.
- Added a couple of utility scripts to the source code distribution for branching and release tagging in the Subversion repository.
- A separate "localization pack" is now available for people who wish to contribute to the project by localizing it into their own language.

Comment by Anonymous: Nice, but I'm looking for something that will let me change users with a keyboard shortcut (panther's keyboard shortcut changer doesn't seem to work with the one that comes with panther. maybe this could be a new feature for this. (7/28/2004, Version: 1.4.1)

Review by JimW: This is now not only as go as the Apple menu, it is much better than the Apple menu. It has become a "must have" for me and will be for anyone who uses lots of menus and who has limited menu bar space. It also has better functionality than Apple's product. It demonstrates what Apple should have done and hopefully will in Tiger. Hopefully they will just compensate this developer for his ideas in a straightforward manner. (7/25/2004, Version: 1.4)
