今回SQL Serverを身銭切って買ったわけだが、本来、こんなものは研究室に置いてあって欲しいとおもう。今春、Microsoftの『MSDE Academic Alliance』を入れようという話が少しだけ出たのだが、ぼくが積極的に提案しなかったこともあってお流れになってしまった。今から考えるともっと強く主張しておくべきだった。

尾内研は実装系の研究室なのに、このソフト面（開発用ソフトウェア、書籍、etc）での貧弱さはどういうことなのか。どうしていまだに卒研生に『Visual C++ 6.0』でコーディングさせているのかが分からない。VS.NETを使えよ、そっちのほうが能率が上がるだろう、と思わずに居れない。書籍の充実度も、実装寄りなものは、ぼくのアパートの本棚のほうが３倍くらい充実している。これは直接的な原因としては尾内先生がhackerではない（手ずからコードを書いたりしない）ということに起因するのだと思われるが、責任はぼくらの側にある。ぼくら配下としてはこのあたり、自分たちから積極的に提案していかなくてはならないのだろう。ぼくとしては、去年は学部生で、研究室のなかで新参だったことから遠慮があったが、今年からは院生になったことだし、なるべく提案していって研究室の環境を整備していきたいと考えている。

これに対する反論として、必要になってから買えば良い、たとえば「卒研生がVS.NETが欲しいと言うようなら買ってあげればいいじゃん」というのがあるだろうがあまり正しくない。「必要になったから買う」というのにはそれが必要であるという認識に至らなくてはならないという極めて高いハードルがある。このあたり、因果を逆にして考えるべきで、「必要になったから買う」のではなく「買ったから必要になる」のだ。もちろん、何でもかんでも手当たり次第に買えば良いというわけではなくて、何を買うのか、という選択は十分に吟味検討されなくてはならないが。

50万円くらい予算を割くことを決めてもらって、あとはぼくらでソフトウェアや本のラインナップを吟味して叩き台を作り、議論して最終案を決めていく……という流れに持っていけないかと考えているが、難しいだろうか。このあたりの金銭感覚がないので、50万円という額を捻出するのが簡単なのか難しいのかもいまいちわからない。
