Hack days are when our team gets to step away from the regular roadmap and work on whatever ideas they so desire. Here’s a taste of what came out of it:
Advanced Search
We added advanced search operators in a previous Hack Day. This time, @lesianlen added an exclusion operator to exclude posts that contain a specific word, phrase, or tag. @ex and @blowery helped out to add a spiffy modal that shows exactly how you can use all available advanced search operators.
Search in Communities
Speaking of search, @lesianlen also worked on adding search within individual Communities to find posts and conversations.
“Latest Comments” Community feed
@jubs and @lesianlen worked on creating a tab within individual communities that bumps a post to the top when someone adds a comment. Easily find posts where conversation is hot!
Nudge to Add Moderators
When your community is growing, you need more people to help run it. @jubs worked on a reminder that suggests just that.
iOS Home Screen Widgets
Ben worked on widgets with quick actions and Radar, making Tumblr even more accessible on your home screen.
iOS Shortcuts and Siri Support
@kostastsi4 explored making Tumblr play more nicely with your iPhone: showing quick links in Spotlight to jump straight to your Dashboard, Messages, Activity, or your blog. He also began adding support for Siri and Shortcuts to open specific tabs, start a new post, or search for exactly what you want.
Suggest Tags Based on Post Content
Tumblr runs on tags. However, picking the right tags for your post can be difficult unless you’re a Tumblr expert. Our current tag suggestions are a combination of tags you follow, tags you’ve used before, and some trending tags. @arandomblog31 worked on suggesting better tags based on the post you’re writing.
Reblog Explorer
Ever wondered how a post spread across Tumblr? @blowery built a full-screen version of the reblog graph view that lets you explore how a post traveled. Click through the graph to see the full reblog trail update in real-time explore different branches. There’s even keyboard navigation — press the up arrow repeatedly to follow the most popular reblog path through the entire graph, or walk backwards toward the original post to see what tags people added along the way.
Identities
@elt began exploring what it would take to eliminate the limitations of secondary blogs.
Some of these will be rolling out soon, others need a bit more time in the oven. Keep an eye on @changes to see when they arrive!

hii! i really like your blog themes, i was wondering if i could use a few of them not for a blog exactly, but as image. like taking a picture of it and editing it for a post, of course with keeping your credit watermark. kind of like a psd template if that makes sense. it’s absolutely okay if not, just wanted to ask. thank you! 🤍

hello, this is the anon regarding the “mirror images” theme’s pinterest board add-on not working. it looks like the bug was fixed, because the add-on is now appearing on all devices. still not sure what the root of the problem was, but i apologise for any inconvenience caused. thank you once again for coding amazing themes!

Hi! This usually happens due to issues on Pinterest's side as the board is just an embedded iframe. Unless you see it happen consistently, then it might be that something's wrong with my scripts. If it's the latter, do let me know.

Why are you.. like.. on the right bottom corner of my screen. I’m just checking out my favorite person’s tumblr and I see this and then I panic and I go: where was I js taken!?!?!?!? This isn’t really a question, I think, but yeah.

Hi! I had a look at your blog and it seems that the feather icons scrip throws an error when the icon class is empty or can't be found. It seems like the first social icon on your blog is empty.

Can you make sure that these settings are filled in? You can find all feather icons here. I think that should fix the issue.

howdy! so i’m using your spotlight theme, and i’m wondering if there’s a way to edit the code so i can see tags on the permalink of posts? i have the theme toggled to “show tags”, and i can see them just fine if i’m scrolling my blog or through a particular tag, but once i open a post’s permalink its tags no longer show up. thanks!

Hi! That's honestly an oversight on my part.

I've updated the code to have tags on the permalink page, too. If you've installed it through the Tumblr theme garden the change won't be live yet but you can get the code from GitHub.

You may have to add additional CSS styling to make sure your image is the correct size.

Hi, yes this is possible but you'll need to add it manually.

You'll need to follow this to define a name for the font and point to the file: https://www.w3schools.com/css/css3_fonts.asp with the url being the URL to your font asset.

After that, you can change the "--fontFamily" variable from the google font placeholder to your font.

All my themes are entirely free to use on Tumblr (and I have nothing against them being used off-site, too as long as the credit's still there).

Hi, I’m the anon asking for the search option which I’m really happy about! :) After installing the theme again, I’m experiencing a problem: When I go to my tumblr address, the standard Tumblr page that asks you to agree/disagree with cookies pops up. When I click Agree it goes back to the previous page/reloads. To go to the page I want I have to go through this process 2-3 times. It also happens when I click on the links I put in my bio as well as using the tags on my pages. The problem also occurs on other browsers and mobile device. Is it possible to fix this, or is this a problem with tumblr? Hope you can help, thanks in advance! Let me know if you need anything else from me x

Hi! I'm glad you love the theme! I did never add search to the theme, I'm not even sure why.

I've added search as an optional feature to the theme now. You'll need to reinstall it from the Theme Garden and toggle the "Show Search" option. (You might have to reload the page and toggle the switch for it to work properly)

I checked the corresponding faq page and couldn’t find anything, I just used your incredible theme Exceed and all my tags dissapeared from the screen in the desktop version of my main blog Also tried googling it but I don’t know anything about coding so I don’t understand what to do here. For those of you who access Tumblr through our Android app, we wanted to share that starting today you may see some differences for search queries and posts that may contain specific types of sensitive content. In order to comply with Google’s Play Store Guidelines, we have adjusted what you’re able to access as it relates to potentially sensitive content while using the Android app.
To remain available within Google’s Play Store, we have added more measures and limit exposure to potentially sensitive content in order to comply with their guidelines and to provide a safer experience to you. To learn more about Google’s Play Store Guidelines, click here.
How you may experience these changes
When browsing Tumblr through Dashboard, Search, Communities and other surfaces you might experience less content and some searches might not produce any results unless you enable “show mature content” in Tumblr settings. Please refer to our Help Center article to learn more.
