About Nights on Earth

Hello, I'm Phil Mosby and I created Nights on Earth.

I am an astro/landscape photographer and fine-art print maker by trade, but I'm also an amateur space enthusiast, and a programmer who has been writing code and creating websites for over 20 years, professionally and for my own projects.

I have been taking photos of the night sky professionally for over 7 years, however it wasn't until 2021 that I finally created the first version of my Nights on Earth Wall Calendar & Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky, a project that I had been dreaming about and planning for many years.

The calendar was a big hit with both space and photography lovers and quickly gained a small local following. I was thrilled with the reception, but I always knew that there was much more potential to the project than a static calendar calibrated to my home town. I had to find a way to generate a custom calendar for each user, using data calibrated to their location, to give it the maximum amount of value.

Many years of toil and thousands of lines of code later, I am thrilled to finally be able to offer my Nights on Earth wall calendar with astronomical times customized to each user's location!

In the process of developing and designing the custom calendar software, I also started creating this website, with the intention that (almost) all of the same information that is available in the printed calendar should also be freely available online. I am very proud of what it has become, and excited to continue developing it over the coming years.

• Greatly improved location search functionality.

• Increased location database from 6,000 locations to 200,000+.

• Various visual UI improvements.

• Fixed a scrolling bug that affected some users when viewing daily details.

• Added Aurora Borealis event when today's K Index is > 3 for those in Latitudes North or South of +/- 49°, and for all locations when K Index > 5.

• Added current K Index datapoint for current day.

• Fixed a glitch that caused incorrect Lunar illumination measurement when the moon does not pass meridian on a given day.

• Integrated Astronomy-Bundle-JS for on the fly Sun and Moon calculations. Currently this has only lead to the addition of Lunar Libration, however many new metrics will be rolled out in future updates.

This IS the night sky calendar you're looking for!

Holy cow! This is one beautiful piece of form and function! Every page is elegantly laid out with gorgeous imagery and loads of useful night sky condition information! All calendars have moon phases, but this one clearly and conveniently indicates a waning moon with a clever dark sky graphic on the appropriate days, making optimal dark sky viewing sessions easy to plan at a simple glance! Very cool! 😎 Upon closer inspection there is sun & moon, rise & set times for everyday. Meteor showers, conjunctions, and eclipses all there. Even planet AND Milky Way visabilty! Whoa! Creator really went above and beyond with this one! Maybe too much so as it continues FULLY ILLUSTRATED into first quarter of 2022! You really get more than your money's worth on this one. Only reservation I have would be I wish it were a little bigger, maybe 14x14". Text is a bit small and hard to read for us older folk and images really deserve to be that much more showcased.
