i can appreciate shadowcest fodder as much as the next guy but perhaps the most integral aspect of the fount of knowledge as a character is that he did not in fact understand himself even remotely and Continues to not do so in the future stages of his life. Like . on a fundamental level his incapability to self reflect upon his relationship to Purpose and why external recognition and abiding by the interests of his creators is so important to him is why shadow milk is like that. like, the earliest official key art we have of them had this very grungy feeling to it that reflected the unknowable-untouchable mystique that shadow milk had as a villain at the time; a calculated and genuinely unnerving antagonist figure who knew more than We did, and conversely we knew effectively nothing about Him. there was a very palpable power imbalance between him and pure vanilla evident even just from the small handful of interactions they had in beast yeast 2 and the tone of the art people made of them, even in the devteam, reflected this very readily. look at all these cool blues and negative space! this aesthetic fucking rules!!
compare this to around the time of fourth anniversary though and you see this very interesting shift; content surrounding shadow milk has become Visibly brighter and theres generally much more emphasis on Scale and Spectacle. thematically you could hearken this to anything from shadow milk finally coming out of the dark (both in a figurative info-void sense and Literally) and stepping into the spotlight on a stage of his own design, or in the case of beast yeast 8 it being pure vanilla shining a light onto his machinations proper, which reflects in how the fandom tends to approach discussion and conveying shadow milk’s character since the Mystery is kind of Solved now in a sense
keep in mind of course that concept art is often inherently Different in intention from the final product in all cases of gamedev as its an exploration of visual elements that may not end up Sticking but for a LONG time the initial examples were really some of the only artwork milkshake fans had of the two and it REALLY influenced the shape of their earliest fanworks in a way that Cannot be understated. its an aesthetic that you really don’t see now in favor/reflective of how devsis is much more out in the open about what this guy’s Deal is (and with their more memefuck treatment of him as an effective game mascot), which of course was an inevitability as his story was unveiled, but its still a bit sad to see the sort of Cryptid Horror energy he initially had sort of get lost to time

this is largely a post act2 what-if at htis rate but a lot of the same beats are widely applicable regardless of your cut off point; gist being the soul jams get chucked into the silver tree and dispersed/“absorbed” back into earthbread itself (which has some funky side effects to the general distribution of magic-related capabilities in the greater populace but that’s a nonissue. mostly.) which leaves both the beasts & ancients free of such a Soul Crushing Responsibility while still reaping the (latent) extended lifespan benefits that came with possessing the virtues long-term, so they don’t like. Collapse and die of old age instantly or anything like that

in shamils case he’s been stabilized somewhat with help from the TBD to be able to serve out his sentence as a time criminal which by tk’s executive call is to Enjoy Your Happy Ending Or Else You Stupid Asshole with a side of Fuck Loads Of Community Service. even with rehabilitation in mind most people would likely (reasonably) consider this to be letting the guy off too easy, but given 1) imprisonment evidently has Never been beneficial in this picture, Ever 2) that he absolutely hates the sheer premise of both of these terms 3) how adamant he was about how they should Just Fucking Kill Him (which pure vanilla especially was Not Cool With) this was the most reasonable conclusion to reach, especially with the newfound Total Absence of Power* in the picture ensuring on the outset he won’t ever be able to repeat most of his major stunts again even if he Wanted To - which pretty much the minute things actually simmer down and he acclimates to living with pv he finds he Absolutely Fucking Doesn’t

*(he’s still a naturally gifted magic user and a lot of his dark moon connections hold true even in the absence of the soul jam, but the scale is Significantly Reduced; most of his energy is newly diverted into the day-to-day practical/convenience-related magic that previously took Basically No Exertion and was mindless to him which now instead takes a Reasonable Level of Exertion for any given cookie. it takes him a very very long time to get used to this)

its interesting how shadow milks fall is what gives way to pure vanilla’s presence as a guiding light, ,in the one alt reality where he manages to overcome his circumstances is the one reality where nilla falls to deceit instead. its an interesting cycle where one influences the other cosmically. without nilla getting the other half of the soul jam he could not properly protect the people he cared about, cause the sage still has his full soul jam, he never fell. but because of that nilla is the one who fell by the way side.
