Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis is honoured with the FEBS Datta Medal at the 50th FEBS Congress that will take place in Maastricht, The Netherlands
The FEBS Datta Medal is a prestigious award, bestowed annually by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies to a distinguished senior scientist for outstanding achievements in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or related sciences. It is one of the top three awards given by FEBS at the annual FEBS Congress, and includes a silver medal and funding for accommodation and travel to the Congress.
New Research by FORTH and the University of Crete
ALBUMIN: The most abundant human blood protein acts as a shield against deadly fungal infections
Scientists at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB-FORTH) and the University of Crete, together with collaborators from Greece, Europe, the USA, and India, have discovered a novel role of albumin, the most abundant protein in human blood, in protecting against a rare and often deadly fungal infection called mucormycosis. The study is published in Nature.

A 40-year journey
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the 2020 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Professor Reinhard Genzel, will deliver an open lecture for the broader scientific community at 14:00, at the G. Lianis Auditorium of the Foundation for Research and Technology–Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion. The lecture is organized by the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH and the Department of Physics of the University of Crete.
FORTH accepts proposals for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Β. Xanthopoulos-St. Pnevmatikos 2026
FORTH announces the 36th call for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Basilis Xanthopoulos and Stefanos Pnevmatikos.For 2026, proposals that fall under the thematic cycle of Life Sciences are accepted.The closing date is Tuesday 30 June 2026.The award can be given to faculty members of Greek universities, specialist scientists and other teaching staff, members of research centers with university teaching work, as well as those who previously had any of the above qualities (e.g., emeritus professors). The award, however, is only given to living people.
