A New Electronic Journal in Theoretical Computer Science

6 September 2004

On September 1, 2004, a new electronic, open-access journal, Logical Methods in Computer Science, opened its submission site. I wish this journal good luck in establishing itself as a top-notch outlet in the theoretical computer science community, and encourage concurrency theorists to submit to it. The editorial board includes several outstanding members of our community, and should encourage submissions within all aspects of concurrency theory related to logic in the broad sense.

I hope that this journal will become as successful as The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics launched by Neil Calkin and Herbert Wilf in 1994. (Actually, both of these combinatorialists can be found in the photo gallery Combinatorialists I Have Known.) Indeed, I believe that the presence of high quality, open access journals will also improve the service offered by traditional publishers. I myself have noticed a great improvement in the service offered by, e.g., Elsevier, and have been very impressed by that publisher's help in several recent projects of mine --- not least the special issue of the Journal of Logic and Algebraic Programming devoted to SOS.

We will all benefit by a varied and competitive offer of outlets for our archival publications. Now I should try to break the mould, and do some research for a change.
