FINNS FLOURISH AS SEEDS SINK IN PITTSBURGH
Three seeds fell in the opening round of the $20,000 Pittsburgh Squash
Open, two felled by Finnish qualifiers Olli Tuominen and Mika Monto.
Monto, the 24-year-old world No65 from Hyvinkaa, dismissed Australia's
2nd seed Anthony Hill, the Amsterdam-based former world No5, 15-9 15-4
12-15 15-10, and goes on to meet 6th seed Lee Beachill - who triumphed
15-7 15-10 15-9 in an all-English clash with Tim Garner.
Demonstrating the same fighting qualities which led him to the Apawamis
Open title in New York last week - again as a qualifier - Tuominen
overturned a two-game deficit to beat Egypt's 3rd seed Omar Elborolossy
12-15, 10-15, 15-13, 15-14, 15-8. The 21-year-old world No37 from
Helsinki now faces eighth-seeded South African Rodney Durbach, who was
also taken to five games before defeating Belgian Stefan Casteleyn
16-17, 17-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-7.
England's world doubles champions Chris Walker and Mark Cairns faced
each other in the first round of a PSA Tour event for the second time in
six days - and again underdog Walker triumphed. The 33-year-old former
England captain from Colchester in Essex, a former world No4 now ranked
40, beat his seventh-seeded partner 15-12, 15-10, 15-10 and progresses
to the quarter-finals where he meets top seed Del Harris, also from
Colchester.
