To learn more about my research interests, go to my
research page.
The web page for the
Programming Languages Group,
with which I am affiliated, has lots of
programming language-related links.
I am now Director of Undergraduate Programs in the
Computer Science Department.
For inquiries related to the undergraduate program,
send e-mail to undergrad@cs.uiuc.edu, or call my secretary,
Kay Tomlin, at 217-333-4427.
The books I've authored or co-authored:
Programming Languages: An Interpreter-Based Approach,
Addison-Wesley, 1990.
Introduction to Programming with
Mathematica,
with Richard Gaylord and Paul Wellin, Springer/TELOS, 1993.
Music.
I listen to a lot of stuff, including opera and blues,
and I have a serious weakness for the
Grateful Dead.
I also pick a little on my old
Gibson
and my new
Strat,
and my even newer
Gibson.
Let me know if you want to jam.
Wine,
mainly American cabs and zins, and Bordeaux.
Driving.
They say 80% of American men consider themselves better-than-average
drivers, but I really am.
I drive a
Subaru Impreza WRX Sport Wagon.
American Civil War.
Winston Churchill called our Civil War the "most inevitable"
among all the wars fought by the English-speaking people.
The period leading up to this war reads like a Greek tragedy.
By establishing the power of the Federal government, it
changed the country's psychology;
it's been said that the name United States of America was
used, in colloquial speech, as a plural noun before the
Civil War and as a singular noun afterwards.
I guess these are some of the reasons that the war continues
to hold peoples' interest after all this time.
I have two offices, my regular office I've always had and my
new office as Director of Undergraduate Programs.
Most weeks, I'm in my Director's office Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,
and in my old office Tuesday and Thursday.
