Konfabulator Widgets

Konfabulator is a wonderful tool for the Mac (and Windows) that provides a domain-specific language for writing widgets. Widgets are mini-applications that “live” on your desktop and provide a simple interface to a small bit of functionality. Konfabulator offers a unique combination of simple programming (via Javascript) and beautiful graphics (via Apple’s Quartz rendering technology). Konfabulator itself is a closed-source shareware application. But Konfabulator widgets are open-source and the culture encourages open sharing of graphics and code. Konfabulator forums foster many collaborations between graphic artists and programmers. The Konfabulator distribution includes a wealth of sample widgets.

I’ve written a few widgets that are useful to me and have made them available in the hope that they’ll be useful to others. One widget, Mail Candy, provides a small, glowing indicator when new mail messages arrive. Another widget, QuietCountDown, counts down the days until an event. A third, Eye Candy, scrapes an image from a URL at regular intervals and displays it as a pop-up from a thin bar on the desktop—handy for monitoring weather radar during Iowa’s thunderstorm season. My widgets are available in the Konfabulator widget gallery. Please note that my widgets are designed for and tested on Mac OS only. If you’re Windows Konfabulator user, you are invited to port the widgets to Windows and share them with the world.

Converter Scripts for Shadow Plan

My scripts have been superceded by James Sorenson‘s packaging of Marc Antoine Parent’s XSLT scripts. You can download James’s scripts from the files section of the shadow-discuss group on Yahoo. Look for “ShadowOmni” in the files listing there. I have removed the legacy version of my scripts, because they are not compatible with the new versions of Shadow Plan or OmniOutliner.
