I am a lecturer (what would be called an assistant professor elsewhere in the world) in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at University College Dublin (aka UCD, UCD Dublin, and sometimes known as the National University of Ireland, Dublin). I help lead the Systems Research Group (SRG).

My KindSoftware research group is partially funded by the European Project Mobius within the frame of IST 6th Framework, by the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, and the IRCSET Embark Initiative.

Between October 2002 and October/November 2004, I was a postdoctoral scholar in the Security of Systems (SoS) Group in the Nijmegen Institute for Computing and Information Science at the Radboud University Nijmegen.

I am a Ph.D. graduate of the Compositional Computing/Infospheres Group in the Department of Computer Science at the California Institute of Technology. I am also an entrepreneur. I have started five companies thus far and I am an independent consultant with over a decade of experience.

I am interested in formal methods, foundations of mathematics, software engineering, software/system/network security, distributed systems, object-oriented and component-based systems and languages, knowledge representation, systems modeling, artificial life, and the many different theoretical underpinnings of computing. In short, I am a Computer Scientist/Mathematician researcher and hacker, in the old sense of the term.

• November 2005 A new talk: Beyond Hoare Logic Assertions: Advanced Specification and Verification with JML and ESC/Java2, presented at Formal Methods for Components and Object (FMCO) 2005 on 4 November, 2005.
• 1 October 2005 ESC/Java 2.0a9 released. This is the tenth (alpha) release of ESC/Java2.
• September 2005 A new paper: Kiniry, J., Chalin, P., and Hurlin, C. "Integrating Static Checking and Interactive Verification: Supporting Multiple Theories and Provers in Verification." VSTTE 2005.
• On Monday, the 6th of June, I had my vision corrected by Dr. Pierre Demers at the Lasik MD facility in Montreal, Canada. 24 hours after surgery I was seeing 20/15. I am very happy to finally be free of glasses after around 27 years. Feel free to write me if you would like to discuss corrective surgery as I have researched it a great deal and went to this clinic for specific reasons.
• I attended the OpenBSD Hackathon in Calgary, Canada. The point of this visit was to learn more about the OpenBSD development processes, community, social and psychological perspectives, etc. I plan on performing new work in this domain in the coming months focusing on specifications and compilation of operating system code.
• I am on a research sabbatical from the end of April until late July 2005. I am visiting Cesare Tinelli at the University of Iowa, Gary Leavens at Iowa State, the OpenBSD Hackathon in Calgary, Canada, Patrice Chalin at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, two conferences, PLDI and LICS, both of which are taking place in Chicago, John Hatcliff at Kansas State, and two conferences in the UK: FM in Newcastle and ECOOP in Glasgow.

• At any given point in time I seem to be in at least three or four projects. This seems to have always been true, so I do not sleep much.
