8 September 2004Two Interesting Essays in the Notices of the AMS
Every now and then, I like to spend some time looking at the Notices of the AMS. Most of the time, the articles there are already too sophisticated for a badly trained theoretical computer scientist like me, but sometimes there are interviews with famous mathematicians, announcements of prizes, biographies, and articles of general interest that strike my fancy. The October 2004 issue contains two pieces that I found interesting. One is an article entitled Computing over the Reals: Where Turing Meets Newton by Lenore Blum. The other, Comme Appelé du Néant--As If Summoned from the Void: The Life of Alexandre Grothendieck by Allyn Jackson, is the first part of a two-part article on the life and mathematics of Alexandre Grothendieck, one of the most influential living twentieth-century mathematicians.
Maybe some of you will enjoy reading those articles too. For the record, I found it surprising that Lenore Blum's article has no reference whatsoever to the work on exact computation by Abbas Edalat and his co-workers.
