Gödel Prize for 2004

It is awards time in the TCS community. After the announcement of the Turing award winner for 2003, this year's Gödel's prize has been been awarded to

• Maurice Herlihy and Nir Shavit for their paper "The topological structure of asynchronous computability" (J. ACM 46(6): 858-923 (1999)), and
• Mike Saks and Fotios Zaharoglou for their paper "Wait-Free k-Set Agreement is Impossible: The Topology of Public Knowledge" (SIAM J. Comput. 29(5): 1449-1483 (2000)).

Congratulations to the winners! It is good to see impossibility results in the PODC community honoured with such a prestigious prize.

For the record, it is the second time that the Gödel prize goes to contributions from the PODC community. A look of the list of awardees for the Gödel prize seems to indicate that our community should be more active in soliciting nominations for this award from next year. I have never sent in any nomination so far, but maybe it is time to start. What outstanding papers in concurrency theory published in recognized journals since 1998 would be good candidates for such an award? It is probably a good idea to start mulling about this question already now.
