The Roads of Greek Wine

The Varieties

Virgil wrote that it is easier to count the grains of sand than all the varieties of the vine. There are frescoes in the fourth Dynasty's Pharoan's graves (circa 4.000 B.C.) depicting six different vine varieties, as well as scenes of vintage and wine-making.

The natural choise, the crossing between varieties, the creation of new ones from man himself and the brand new character developed bu the varieties that traveled abroad, provided the wine-makers with precious and almost endless material.

Hundreds of vine varieties are still cultivated in our country. One that comes from Aristotle's days, keeping its name almost intact is Limnia, today know as Limnio. There are many that have been lost since, as well as numerous others that have been neglected due to the lack of financial interest.

Today the main varieties are:

    Foreign Varieties

For the last 20 years, some of the well known foreign varieties have been cultivated in our country. The most well-known are:

    with white grapes

    with red grapes

We didn't refer to varieties producing rose grapes, as the making of the rose wines is done by specially processing red wines.

One of the red varieties is Moschofilero. Although its grapes are red, it is processed almost always with the methods used in white wine-making, and the wine it gives is white.
