Adaptation. (Regal Fox Tower 10, Auditorium 1, 030307)
Very good acting by Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper in a comedy which is as much about real life as it is about the movie itself, Charlie Kaufman's struggles as a writer, to be specific. Yes, there is an element of recursion here! It starts off with a scene from the filming of Being John Malcovich, another movie with an element of recursion, also written by Charlie Kaufman.

The Game (DVD, 020907)
When Nick van Orton (Michael Douglas) asks about The Game, one of the characters in the movie replies I envy you, I wish I could go back and do it for the first time, all over again. I guess I had a similar feeling after seeing The Game, thinking it would be completely pointless to see it a second time. But I acutally enjoyed watching it again, paying extra attention to some details. For example, I enjoyed seeing Anson Baer (Armin Mueller-Stahl), wearing the same suit as Grierson in The Thirteenth Floor. Also, when Nick van Orton visits, Consumer Recreation Services, for the first time, the camera deliberately pans down to emphasize the fact that their office is located on the 14th floor...

Matrix (Biopalatset 3, 991007)
A movie that contains a lot of exaggerated violence of the kind that some people think would have a bad influence on the teenaged audience the movie is intended for. However, most of it takes place in a virtual reality, so the official message still is "don't try this at home kids, buy a video game!". There also were some better than average philosophical reflections on the relation between reality and virtual reality.

A Simple Plan (Svea, 990717)
Three men find a bag full of money (millons of dollars). Should they be honest and turn it in or keep it for themselves and get a chance to escape from their dull life in a small town? The theme and the story is somewhat similar to Very Bad Things, but whereas Very Bad Things is too hysterical (in the typical Hollywood exaggerated acting style), reaching its peak of intensity already after 20 minutes, leaving you a bit numb and indifferent to what happens in the rest of the movie, A simple plan is so slow paced in the beginning that a narrator has been added to bring some kind of life to it. It gets better, though, but perhaps not good enough to wake you up if you happened to fall asleep in the beginning. In both movies there is a woman (played by Cameron Diaz in Very Bad Things and by Bridget Fonda in A simple plan) that affects her man to do things against his better judgement.

Entrapment (Palladium, 990604)
A nice, but not very capturing story.
Plus
The opening scene, particularly the sound effects, seems to be inspired by a similar scene in The Wrong Trousers. One of the characters resembles Jabba de Hutt in the Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi.
Minus
The cut was a bit sloppy, I think. One wonders if the original cut was considered to be too long and the movie was cut down by someone who was not involved in the original production.

Starthip Troopers (Royal, 980104)
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also directed Total Recall, Robocop and Basic Instinct. The only good actor in the move was Michael Ironside, who also appeared in Total Recall and the TV series V. The remaing actors are all very young and seem to have been hired for their good looks rather than their acting skills. The graphical effects are good, and although the movie in large parts reminded of pre WW-II recruitment propaganda, it had some some kind of freshness.

Alien: Resurrection (Biopalatset, 971215)
Knowing that this Alien movie was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and having been told by friends that this movie was different from the others, I could actually enjoy the movie, mostly by not taking it so seriously and seeing the humour in everything. (But, as Kjell said, if it is a Volvo you want, you will be disappointed if you get a Saab.)

Contact (Biopalatset, 971121)
Dr. Eleanor Arroway (well played by Jodie Foster) is a radio astronomer searching for extra terestial intelligence. The beginning of the movie captures the atmosphere within the research community in a good way. It touches many issues relating to research and the possibility of contacting life on other planets: philosophy of science, Occam's razor, religion, politics. But it seems that these issues aren't the primary interest of the director Robert Zemeckis, since in some of these scenes, the actors just seem to be reading their lines, without really understanding them. Some other scenes, dealing with friendship, love and grief, are better. The movie also contains some excellent visual effects.
