About HWUCU

HWUCU is the Heriot-Watt University branch of the University and College Union, a trade union and professional association representing all types of professional staff in the UK HE and FE sectors. At Heriot-Watt members include academic, contract research, administrative, library and computer staff.

As well as supporting individual members, HWUCU negotiates conditions of service on behalf of all academic and academic related staff through the Joint Negotiating and Consultancy Committee. Users of the University Intranet may read JNCC minutes here.

HWUCU Committee Minutes

HWUCU Committee Minutes are available here. For access details, please contact G.Michaelson@hw.ac.uk .

Why join HWUCU?

I want to have a say in how the university is run.

Members of the HWUCU committee meet with senior university managers at least once a term to discuss issues raised by members. During restructuring these meetings were far more frequent. Determined work by committee members meant that compulsory redundancy was avoided at both Edinburgh and Scottish borders campuses.

I'm concerned about what's happening with Universities and all the changes that are being made. What can I do about it?

As a member of a union, it is not just you but with other working people we can exert collective strength to protect and promote working conditions. Collective bargaining on salaries is one way that the unions work to improve wages for all University workers.

Things are difficult in my department right now, I dread Monday mornings but I can't really talk about the situation I'm in with my colleagues.

If you are a member, the union can take up your case and you can get free legal advice if that is necessary.
