C A P P S ' 9 4 C O N F E R E N C E COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS OF PARALLEL PROCESSING SYSTEMS - CALL FOR PAPERS - October 17-19, 1994 Stouffer Hotel, Austin, Texas Sponsored by The RGK Foundation Sybase Tandem HPCWire University of Microelectronics and AT&T Global Texas at Austin Computer Technology Information (see note 1) Corporation Solutions CONFERENCE OVERVIEW Parallel processing computer systems (including shared memory systems loosely coupled, distributed memory systems, clusters, etc.) are beginning to displace mainframes in some market niches. It is no longer the case that aggressive use of parallel processing is restricted to scientific and engineering markets. This Second CAPPS Conference will explore the uses of parallel processing systems in the domain of commercial applications - applications which are crucial to the management and operation of commercial, industrial and governmental enterprises. The Conference will bring together parallel processing system vendors, current and potential users of parallel processing systems from both information management and scientific/engineering areas, software system vendors and researchers to focus on the opportunities and challenges of applying parallel processing to current and new commercial applications. DEADLINES **************************************************************** August 1, Submission Date for 3 copies of a paper, maximum of 1994 20 double-spaced pages, on a topic suitable to the theme and audience of this conference. September 1, Notification 1994 October 1, Camera-ready copy due 1994 TARGET AUDIENCE ********************************************************** Influential representatives from three distinct groups: Commercial/industrial/government users Vendors of parallel processing systems and software Researchers in the area of commercial parallel processing SUGGESTED TOPICS AND ISSUES ********************************************** Topics of sessions and presentations could include (but are not limited to) the following: Factors which limit commercial use of parallel processing systems Kinds of commercial applications well suited to parallel execution Requirements for parallel processing systems installed in commercial enterprises Case studies of profitable, parallel commercial applications Levels of expertise and training required to integrate and utilize parallel processing systems in commercial/industrial/government installations I/O requirements in commercial parallel processing systems Significant features which distinguish commercial and scientific applications What languages are used to develop commercial applications? What runtime systems will be expected? What kinds of software development environments will be needed? The role of standards (languages, runtime, data management, networking, etc.) Where will libraries of support software be developed? How will they be supported, distributed, accessed and used in these enterprises? Impact of object-oriented programming and parallel processing systems Is there (or will there be) a parallel processing software industry?
