SEG 2105 Introduction to Software Engineering
Fall 2007
Principles of software engineering: Requirements, design and
testing. Review of principles of object orientation. Object oriented
analysis using UML. Frameworks and APIs. Introduction to the
client-server architecture. Analysis, design and programming of simple
servers and clients. Introduction to user interface
technology. Prerequisite: ITI1121
Object Oriented Software Engineering: Practical Software
Development Using UML and Java, Timothy C. Lethbridge and
Robert Laganiere, McGraw Hill, 2nd edition, 2005.
The textbook will be available at Benjamin Books, 122 Osgoode
Street.
All assignments are now in my office and can be picked up
during office hours in the Winter term.
Quizzes
There will be periodic in-class quizzes, and they may
sometimes be unannounced. They will not count toward your final
mark, but they will be marked and returned to you.
Midterm
The midterm will be Wednesday, October 24, during class in
Fauteux Room 227.
Covers material from the textbook Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, and 11;
also covers material from labs and assignments
It is closed book, except that you are allowed:
One standard 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper (crib sheet) on
which you may have written or typed notes on both sides. No
photocopies allowed.
It must be in your own words, though material such as
definitions and diagrams may be copied (by hand or by typing)
exactly.
You must hand this crib sheet in with your exam.
Possible questions include (but are not limited to):
short answers about general material, definitions,
diagrams, lab material
"exercises" involving diagrams, etc. (like those in the
textbook)
multiple choice and/or true/false questions
Final Exam
The final exam will be Friday, December 14, 14:00-17:00, in
SITE Room B0138
Covers all material from the course: textbook, labs, and
assignments
Closed book, except that you are allowed a crib sheet with the
same specifications as for the midterm.
A sample exam from a
previous year and solutions to
selected questions are available. Note that the textbook used
for this course was an earlier edition, so some of the material
may be different.
Supplementary Material (Note: these slides supplement the
lecture. They do not cover the main material.)
A sample solution to the Bank Accounts Management System that
we did in class is available. Go to the "Solutions manual for
students" (from the textbook web site, follow the link to "List of
exercises") and see problems E5.18(a), E5.20(a), E5.22(a), and
E5.24(a).
