Portland pictures, August 2000
[go: Go Back, main page]

I took all of these in August 2000. Pictures of my former residences are on another page.

FYI

Since this is apparently unclear to some people (hi, "basementdweller"): if you're going to steal a picture and a caption, I suggest you actually copy the picture instead of link to it; if you link to it, I will find out, and only my innate good nature will prevent me from replacing the picture with something less appropriate, instead of merely renaming the file to break your link.

[Union Station]

Portland Union Station, from Sixth. The upper floors are leased offices, but the first floor is still an Amtrak station.

At the bus stop near Union Station, looking south down Fifth.
[Broadway Bridge]
On the Broadway Bridge, looking west to the Northwest Portland hills. The Union Station tower is just visible on the left. The green sign has the phone number of a suicide-counseling hotline; all the Portland bridges have these signs.

[PCAT building]
PCAT, the infamous home of the Portland State University Department of Computer Science. It was once the Blue Cross/Blue Shield building (before they moved to a boring skyscraper a few blocks away), which explains the "Smurf Hut" ambience and the cross motif.

[PCAT building]
Above: Another shot of PCAT, this time looking east from the skybridge that connects the University Services Building (itself a shining example of Concrete Brutalism) and the School of BizAdmin building. The Portland Center apartments, which block the view of Southeast Portland, were part of "urban renewal". Below: The rather silly little plaza between the new Urban Center building (off the picture to the left) and PCAT. The only real use for this pseudo-space is as a skateboard park, but of course skateboarding on the numerous and variously sized steps is strictly prohibited. On the other hand, it used to be a minor two-way street, which is probably even more useless.

[Steel Bridge]
The Steel Bridge. Below: note the MAX train.
