I was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on 26 March 1980. South Africa, as the name suggests, is the southern most country of the African continent. The country has a colourful history, is extremely beautiful and has wonderful weather so come and visit if you ever get an opportunity. Pretoria is located towards the northern part of the country, in the greater metropolitan area of Tshwane, which is generally not famous for anything except maybe Jacaranda trees and the fact thats its the administrative capital.
I attended Pretoria Boys High School and matriculated in 1998. I then studied at the University of Pretoria towards a degree in Computer Engineering (Picture of the Engineering Faculty). During my studies I regularly worked at Vodacom, one of SA's three cellular providers. My final year project involved the design of a field area network for measuring and control. I was responsible for implementing the embedded nodes and the FAN infrastructure while another student designed a TCP/IP gateway to access the controller network remotely. I also played around with the idea of securing the simple network communications using smartcards (final product). My ideas about security were woeful but I guess thats where my interest started. I graduated with a B.Eng degree in 2002 and stayed on as a teaching assistant at the department. I completed the requirements for a M.Eng qualification before coming to Cambridge in October 2003.
I used to play tournament paintball as a hobby. Now when not working I'm probably out rowing on the Cam.
