I have interests in cycle advocacy and traffic management in general. I am a supporter of Cycling Health and the Cycling Advocates’ Network.

Being concerned over road safety I am of course totally opposed to New Zealand’s bicycle helmet legislation; as it is anti-health, anti-safety, and anti-common sense. As a scientist I simply cannot understand how the Government believes that promoting a law which doesn’t work, while avoiding implementing measures which do, instead of fixing the law, improves health and safety, but then I’m not a politician... I presented a paper at Cycling 2001 on this, showing the law had failed and calling for it to be either fixed or abolished, and it may be found here.

I used to be Editor of ChainLinks. If you are looking for the ChainLinks Special Edition, it may be found here.

This picture embodies many of my hopes and dreams for New Zealand. It is a great photo of a family outing. Mum, Dad, with young son sitting up front enjoying the view.

It’s healthy, fun, and all round wholesome.

However the significance of it is where it is from – the cover of a motoring map produced by a motoring organisation. When New Zealand prints such pictures on its motoring maps, we will have arrived.

May we not bury too many on that journey.
