Science Dictionary

(English-Greek)

The English-Greek Theoretical Computer Science dictionary is an ongoing project spawned from my own need to be able to understand in my mother language scientific terms that I come across while conducting my research. It is an attempt to capture in one place the most accurate and precise translations I've found or have attempted myself. It contains translations for words like concurrency, bisimilarity, eager evaluation, introspection, lattice, arity and others that are translated erroneously or inappropriately in standard dictionaries.

It currently contains a very small number of words (261 at the time of writing) but the aim is to develop into a proper dictionary by the time I finish my PhD. I'd be happy to hear back from you with for any questions, corrections or suggestions for the dictionary.

The dictionary has been produced with the freely available Babylon Builder product and integrates with their commercial Babylon Dictionary. Of course the dictionary file format is plain text with newline as the delimiter between words which shouldn't be difficult to process using any other custom made parser.

Credits: Compiling a dictionary can never be the work of a single person and naturally I've been studying other people's work to find the most common and acceptable translation in use. Bellow are some people (which I don't know personally) and links to resources I've used for which I thank them all.

BlueJ in Greek

The BlueJ environment was developed as part of a university research project about teaching object-orientation to beginners. The system is being developed and maintained by a joint research group at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, and the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. The project is supported by Sun Microsystems.

The aim of BlueJ is to provide an easy-to-use teaching environment for the Java language that facilitates the teaching of Java to first year students. Special emphasis has been placed on visualisation and interaction techniques to create a highly interactive environment that encourages experimentation and exploration.

My contribution to the BlueJ software was the translation of the interface in Greek. The translation is available in all version after 2.1 and can be activated by eliminating the comment the comment sign (#) from the line "bluej.language=greek" in the file "bluej.defs". jMule

This report provides an overview of the final year project undertaken as part of a BSc (Hons) degree in Computer Science at the University of Kent during the academic year 2003-4. The project involved creating a software application that enables multiple physically isolated individuals to collaborate, learn, and give presentations through virtual meetings. The solution produced was entitled jMule, the Java Multi User Learning Environment. This paper outlines the processes, design rationale, implementation and testing that were conducted during this project and offers an exploration of possible future enhancements. It concludes by offering critical evaluation on the overall success of the project.

WS-Composer

In this dissertation we present a novel approach for performing model checking of Web Services composition on computational and data Grid infrastructures. Using two theoretical modelling languages for the specification of distributed systems and processes (Petri nets and CCS) we specify composition in an abstract way that is useful for implementations. Finally, we present the design of a prototype tool that implements these ideas and give directions for future research.
