Daily dose of health
Stretch more, live better
We spend a large part of our day sitting, whether commuting, working or relaxing, resulting in a mostly sedentary lifestyle. Prolonged sitting causes some muscles to shorten, leading to discomfort, reduced flexibility and a higher risk of strains, tears and joint pain.
Hence, stretching is essential for counteracting these effects by maintaining muscle elasticity, improving strength, and enhancing blood circulation. Stretches help your body to move freely with less limitations, allowing you to partake in more physical activities which promote kidney health.
Seated glute stretches
- Sit upright and place right ankle on top of the left knee.
- Use both hands to hold down lightly on the right leg.
- Slowly bend body forward while keeping the back straight.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Hip flexor stretches
- Stand upright with left leg forward and right leg back.
- Slide body forward by bending the left knee while keeping the right leg straight.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Seated iliotibial band stretch
- Sit upright while placing the right foot planted firmly on the ground and left leg extended forward with the toe pointing to the ceiling.
- Reach the left toe with right hand while reaching left hand up towards the ceiling.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Seated hamstring stretch
- Sit upright while placing the left foot planted firmly on the ground and right leg extended forward with the toe pointing to the ceiling.
- Keep the back straight. Slowly bend body forward while reaching right toe with right hand.
- Switch sides and repeat.
To ensure the effectiveness of each stretch, hold it for at least 30 seconds, aiming to feel light to moderate discomfort. For optimal results, repeat each stretch for 2 to 4 sets throughout the day and aim to stretch at least 2 to 3 days a week, or more frequently if needed. Avoid bouncing during stretches as this can increase the risk of injury. By maintaining a consistent stretching routine, you can enhance relaxation, improve flexibility, and feel more prepared to tackle your day with ease
