Referee partnered with Bryt Designs to fully rebuild and modernize the Referee online store, transitioning from a legacy ecommerce platform to a scalable, Shopify-based solution designed to support future growth, improved customer experience, and operational efficiency.

The scope of work focused on creating a stable, flexible ecommerce foundation that better serves the officiating community while reducing internal friction for staff. This included a complete platform migration, user experience redesign, and backend restructuring to support digital products, physical merchandise, promotions, and future integrations.

Bryt led the technical implementation of the new Shopify environment, including theme customization, navigation architecture, product organization, and checkout optimization. Particular emphasis was placed on mobile usability, performance, and clarity, recognizing that a significant portion of Referee customers shop from phones or tablets. The new design prioritizes clean layouts, intuitive browsing, and streamlined purchasing paths to reduce friction and abandoned carts.

In addition to the front-end experience, Bryt supported backend configuration and operational setup. This included product data migration where appropriate, creation of collections and tagging logic, payment gateway configuration, tax and shipping rules, and foundational analytics. Historical data that could not be reliably migrated was intentionally excluded to ensure system integrity and a clean launch environment.

The project also accounted for Referee’s broader digital ecosystem and long-term roadmap. The store was built to function independently while remaining compatible with future initiatives, including deeper content integration, digital delivery tools, promotional campaigns, and membership-related workflows. The result is a future-proof ecommerce platform that can evolve alongside Referee’s audience, product mix, and strategic goals.

This rebuild represents a foundational investment rather than a one-time cosmetic upgrade. The new Referee Store provides a modern, secure, and flexible platform that improves the customer experience today while enabling faster iteration, experimentation, and growth in the years ahead.

The Referee online store rebuild delivered clear improvements in performance, usability, and internal efficiency. The move to Shopify resulted in a more stable and reliable platform, with fewer checkout and payment issues compared to the previous system. Page load times and overall site performance improved, particularly on mobile devices.

The redesigned storefront significantly enhanced the user experience, with cleaner navigation, better product organization, and a smoother checkout flow. Mobile usability issues present on the legacy platform were eliminated, making it easier for customers to browse and complete purchases.

From an operational standpoint, the new platform reduced internal friction. Staff can now manage products, pricing, promotions, and content updates without developer assistance, enabling faster updates and greater flexibility.

The project also established a clean analytics baseline by intentionally limiting legacy data migration, improving the accuracy of reporting going forward. Finally, the store was successfully soft launched during a low-volume period, allowing real-world testing with minimal customer disruption and building confidence ahead of a broader rollout.

Bryt demonstrated strong project management throughout the rebuild. Timelines were clearly communicated, milestones were met as expected, and deliverables were completed on schedule. They were proactive in flagging risks, flexible when priorities shifted, and effective at translating our needs into workable solutions. Overall, the project stayed organized, collaborative, and on track from start to finish.

One area for improvement would have been more proactive guidance early in the process around best practices and strategic recommendations. While Bryt was very responsive and executed well once direction was set, a bit more upfront consultative leadership, especially in helping us make early decisions or flagging options we had not considered, could have made the process even smoother.

Our existing website for the office building that my company manages and leases was very poor in quality, content and "look":; failed regularly and did not receive much traffic at all.   Bryan and his team worked with our group to gather, review all potential content and his team successfully engineeered/designed a totally new look and functionality like we've never experienced in the past.

Our platform helps companies like Google, DoorDash, Pepsi, General Mills, Mondelez, and many others to grow and scale their experiential marketing efforts to reach highly targeted prospects.

We needed to transform Recess from an Agency into a Tech company by building a marketplace platform from the ground up that automated what we knew was already working for us manually. The platform would enable us to exponentially grow our client base without having to grow our headcount too much.

I had worked with Bryt Designs at other startups where the team had demonstrated successful product design and we already knew that working with them was a joy.

Bryte Designs drives both: Public Marketing Website Design and Implementation written in Rails Private Application UI and UX and Graphic Design written in VueJS The private application is where most of our complexity lies - this is a 2-sided marketplace platform written in Ruby on Rails and VueJS. The team iterates over wireframes and UX concepts, starting at low fidelity and forming high-fidelity mockups as we go refine use cases. With their help, we are able to design User interfaces that are functional and fit perfectly with the underlying data structures. Scaling the amount of data that needs to be presented on the screen varies based on the feature, and the final design is always a level above the data scale that is needed, which allows our users to use the same UI as their data in the app grows.

The number of people we have been working with simultaneously is 3 or fewer and are a combination of UI/UX designers and JavaScript Coders.

Our company has grown by almost 10X in valuation since we started working with Bryt Designs about 3 years ago. Our min client purchase on the platform we have built has grown from a couple of thousand dollars per purchase to 10s of thousands of dollars per purchase.

The project management style is pretty laid back, stress-free, perfectly punctual, and very professional. We collaborate over slack and have 2 standing jam sessions each week. On occasion, we do add extra jam sessions to avoid getting into a crunchtime situation. The Team can ramp up and down as needed if we give them an ample heads-up.

The attention and focus on the User's Experience are fantastic. The team doesn't simply agree with us because we think something is a cool idea. They have the experience and insights to know that a cool idea does not always make the best end-user experience and they keep us on track and guide us toward the best practices, while at the same time innovating new UI/UX based on our unique data set

It would be great if we could directly hire people from Bryt Designs straight onto our team, however, I have come to grips that that is not how their business model works.
