Opposition to the legalization of abortion is centered around the pro-life movement, a political movement opposing elective abortion on moral grounds and supporting its legal prohibition or restriction. The term pro-life was coined in 1973 by U.S. leaders of the anti-abortion movement who styled themselves "right-to-life". The pro-life movement formed as a countermovement in response to feminist pressure to legalize elective abortion, especially in opposition to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion at the federal level. The pro-life movement in the U.S. is allied with the Republican Party, and seeks to restrict abortion with legislation such as the Human Life Amendment.
