Likely from Proto-Germanic *bugja- (“swollen up, thick”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰ ew-, *bu- (“to swell”). Compare bigge (“powerful, strong”), Norwegian bugge (“big man”), dialectal Low German Bögge, Boggelmann (“goblin, snot”) from Proto-Germanic *pūkô (“a goblin, spook”).
