コンテンション; 回線争奪; 競合; コンテンション(ローカルエリアネットワークにおける)
複数の装置やプログラムが一つのものを競争して使用しようとしている状態.たとえば,マルチプレクサチャネルの時分割の場合,複数の装置が同時に伝送しようとするときに生じる.
特にデータ通信の分野で使用される.複数のデータステーションが共通の通信回線を介して,同時に転送しようとしたり,二つのデータステーションが両方向通信で同時に転送しようとする場合起こる状態.この状態で,通信要求の早いものから処理する方法をコンテンション方式という.つまり通信回線の両側から送信要求が出されると,回線上で二つの送信要求が衝突し送信権を奪い合うことから生じた名前である.簡単に言えば,「早い者勝ち」方式.
同一のデータ伝送路上で2台以上のデータ局が同時にデータを伝送しようとしたときに発生する状態.
ローカルエリアネットワークにおいて,媒体アクセス制御プロトコルが2台以上のデータステーションの同時伝送を許容し,そのために衝突の発生する可能性がある状態.

From 中期英語 contencion, borrowed from Old French contencion, from Latin contentio, contentionem, from contendō (past participle contentus); equivalent to contend + -tion (similar formation to attention).
