From Proto-West Germanic *uʀanþ, from Proto-Germanic *uzanþą, a compound of Proto-Germanic *uz (“out”) + *anþą (“breath”). The latter word is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁-. Germanic cognates include Old Frisian omma, Old Norse ǫnd, andi (Swedish ande).
