orthotactics (uncountable)

1. (linguistics) The restrictions a language applies to the positions and patterns of graphemes in written words.

   The orthotactics of Spanish usually use the letter u after the letter g to signal a hard g, whereas the orthotactics of Italian usually use the letter h for that purpose.
