saliunca f (genitive saliuncae); first declension

1. nard (plant or aromatic ointment)
   • 70 BCE – 19 BCE, Virgil, Eclogues 5.16–18:

     Lenta salix quantum pallenti cedit olivae,
     puniceis humilis quantum saliunca rosetis,
     iudicio nostro tantum tibi cedit Amyntas.

     As pliant willow bows before the pale olive tree, as the nard does before the rose so red, so, as I reckon, Amyntas yields to you.

   • c. 77 CE – 79 CE, Pliny the Elder, Naturalis Historia 21.19:

     Illa quoque non omittenda differentia est, et odoratorum multa nihil adtinere ad coronamenta, ut irim atque saliuncam, quamquam nobilissimi odoris utramque.

     This distinction is too not to be overlooked, that many a fragrant flower is not to be used in garland-making, as for the iris and the nard, although either of them gives out an exquisite odor.
