Possibly borrowed from Old Norse *augna, from Proto-Germanic *augnōną; compare Proto-West Germanic *taugnōn and the descendants listed there. Alternatively, formed in 中期英語 from augna, genitive plural of Old Norse auga (“eye”), owing to its frequent use in compounding.
