1. A scale that is long and thin, resembling a hair.

     The hairscales are homologous with the other scales and this is our reason for suggesting the term hairscale. We strongly disagree with using only one term such as mastigonemes for all hair shaped appendages, since this implies a homology which is obviously not correct
