From 中期英語 infer (“entrance”), from 古期英語 infær (“ingress, entrance, ingang”), from Proto-Germanic *in + *farą (“a going”), corresponding to in- +‎ fare. Related to 古期英語 infaru (“inroad, incursion, invasion”). Compare German einführen (“to introduce”).
