i am absolutely going to ramble so here’s a tldr:

nemisi is still NOT canceled. i have another blog (@sanguineshadow-if) for a MUCH smaller side project (also horror!) that i’ve been working on while i restructure nemisi. if you’re gonna send me hate abt having a side project i do not gaf man at least read my reasoning below

also, i know the last time i was here i mentioned my mother had cancer. as of right now, she’s completely cancer free :)

as i said above, nemisi is NOT CANCELED! yay. i’ve put a lot of love into it, and while it’s not at a state i’m happy with any more, i’m working on actually outlining it in a way that won’t overwhelm me.

my problem/roadblock with nemisi (aside from irl stuff) came in the form of me having no prior experience with twine or branching narratives and wanting to make something too ambitious for a first project!! dont do that guys. i got overwhelmed after posting about it during an (admittedly unmedicated manic episode lol) and the outline was a MESS!!! a complete mess. hence why i’m struggling through restructuring it.

i mentioned my side project @sanguineshadow-if because this was the focus of my brainstorming when i couldn’t think about nemisi because it made me so anxious i got sick. it’s much, MUCH smaller in scale both mechnically and stakes wise (for MC). it no longer makes me nearly as anxious/overwhelmed to handle, and i think having my other project cooking in the background these past several months helped with that.

while i am absolutely not abandoning my pride and joy nemisi, i do want to be transparent in that i’ll most likely be focusing on the side project at least for a bit. i believe the experience a smaller project might give me will do wonders for how i go about tackling nemisi. part of my anxiety came from delivering a subpar game.

I had just discovered Nemisi and I am already invested on the concept. And that we get to play as a feral MC with a few non-human traits. Eden already has my heart, and trust they will be getting another cat (me btw) that will crush them from trying to cuddle. 🥰 And I do wonder if MC has any other unusual visual traits besides their sharp teeth and being able to unhinge their jaw.

eden is a cuddler so they'd love mc being a weighted blanket for them LMAO. though only once they aren't scared mc will snap and eat them in their sleep, of course.

i've been wanting to amp up the unusual traits in my rewrite, yeah. maybe up to the player how extreme they wanna go? if i want to code that in? mc will always be mostly human as that's what they started off as, but i do like the classic body horror aspect of like, hitting puberty and your body is new and different and scary. even if i don't code options in i will say feel free to imagine them as more scary and monstrous so long as they could like, feasibly blend in amongst humans somehow for the most part lolol because i love when there is a guy (gender neutral) who looks mostly human and could be mistaken as one at first glance before you realize something is horrifically wrong with them.

so yeah, while i might not code them in, go crazy! if you need inspo i'm putting some recent things i've been inspired by (bc yes!! i do think about the game when i can and it strikes) for the rewrite under the cut

originally i did say mc's jaw is more like a snakes and while i still like the idea i've also been toying around with the aspect of it being more... eel like. i kinda wanna give them a pharyngeal jaw and maybe lean into the deep sea/general aquatic-ish type of mutations for mc. dunno how exactly i wanna work it in yet but some form of bioluminescence to lure in prey could be fun! i'm also probably just gonna give them slightly reflective eyes in the dark as well no matter what.

i also am deeply in love with the classic trope of unknowable eldritch entity takes residence in the sea so. talking about this is giving me some thoughts on sullyr actually

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.) Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

hi! a much needed update. i’ll keep it short and simple.

tldr: nemisi is not cancelled, and i’m coming out of hiatus! though i’m probably going to rewrite (or at least restructure) stuff. expect some previews/sneak peeks soon!!

i finally moved after a long period of being depressed (being gay/trans in a rural town is NOT fun) and lacking motivation for any creative processes. im moving AGAIN though, so i probably won’t be able to post much for the next 2 weeks until then, but after that expect me to be annoying you all with updates.

i’ve also finally got used to my work/volunteer schedule on top of schooling, so i’m much less stressed out and have some time cut out of most days that i can write. i’ve actually been writing/plotting a bit for nemisi in my free time already. i work better writing physical notes, and i’ve nearly filled half a notebook with planned restructures/notes.

thank you all for being patient with me! i hope you enjoy the next update, whenever that comes out.
