’Tis better to have lovebombed and lost than never to have lovebombed at all, and Isaia Huron clearly believes this. These 10 songs express the South Carolina R&B singer’s romantic intentions, lustful confessions and most vulnerable thoughts about companionship, all without a filter or a shred of doubt. Lovebombing—i.e., coming on extremely hot and heavy in the early days of a relationship—isn’t for the faint of heart, and Huron would rather sing exactly what he’s feeling than play it cool, even if it falls on deaf ears. He earns the title across Mr. Lovebomb, from the heady “give you my word” (“I don’t want another moment where I can’t stare at your eyes”) to the languid “breakfast and matcha” (“I saw a life with you beyond our honeymoon”) and beyond, all while indulging in gorgeous vocal runs and lush instrumentals. He’s blunt with a jealous lover on “propane” (“Believe me, nobody’s a threat to you”), he navigates a rough patch beautifully on “versions” (“I hope you know when we fight/You’re fighting with a lo-res version of me”). On the urgent (but not anxious) closer “side slider”, he doesn’t hesitate to admit he’s staring at his phone and waiting for a text to confirm whether or not he’s spending the night alone; at one point, he laments, “So much for a lover’s dream/So much for stability.” Mr. Lovebomb proves in spades that he doesn’t necessarily need the stability to keep dreaming—and keep singing love songs that people can keep falling for.
