Your trust is important to us. We are committed to building and maintaining your trust – and that starts with being transparent about what we do to protect your privacy when you use Poe.
At a quick glance
Your interactions with bots and apps are only visible to you and the model provider, unless you (1) share them, (2) interact with other users in group chats, or (3) interact with half shield bots or apps (see below), in which case the developers who created those bots or apps may be able to see them.
Your interactions with bots and apps are aggregated or anonymized before they are shared with AI model providers or developers, unless you interact with other users in group chats, in which case AI model providers and developers may receive limited personally identifiable information to help the model distinguish between users.
Understanding the privacy shield
Every bot or app has a privacy shield icon that indicates how it will handle your chats. You can find the privacy shield icon in the bot or app info card:

Fully shaded

Data is shared with AI model providers (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google, FireworksAI) or with services that run inside Poe’s sandboxed environment by default.
Your interactions with the bot or app will not be used by AI model providers for training purposes.
Half shaded

Data may be shared with AI model providers, the developer who created the bot or app, and/or any external resources accessed by the bot or app.
Your interactions with the bot or app may be used for training purposes.
Privacy Shield Permissions
A bot or app can change from full shield to half shield if you grant it new permissions. If you grant new permissions for a specific interaction, the privacy shield that applies to that interaction will be visible in the message info page:

If you interact with other users in a group chat, any user in the chat can call a variety of bots and apps in the chat. When interacting with other users, please see the message info page for the shield level that applied to any message or query in that chat, which may differ from the shield level applicable to your own interactions with the same bots or apps.
You have questions, we have answers – FAQs
What personal data does Poe collect? We collect information such as your name, email address, and IP address to create your Poe account. Please visit the Poe Privacy Policy to learn more.
Can other Poe users see my chats? No, other users can’t read your chats with bots or apps on Poe unless you explicitly decide to share them (for example, by inviting another user into the chat) or interact with other users in a group chat.
What does “anonymized” chats mean? The personal data associated with your Poe account (e.g. name and email) is not sent to our AI model providers – in other words, they do not know who you are when they receive the contents of your chats from us.
Are my chats shared with third parties? We share the contents of your chats with AI model providers that power the bots and apps on Poe (including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta), and with third-party developers if you interact with half shield bots or apps. Although we take steps to help keep your identity private, any personal data you include in your chats with the bots or apps is shared with the AI model providers and may be shared with developers (remember, please use caution and avoid sharing sensitive information, such as your credit card number, with the bots and apps).
Are my chats used to train the AI models? In most cases, no. Only third-party developer bots and apps are permitted to use your chats to train their models. You can check the bot’s or app’s privacy shield icon to find out what type of bot or app it is.
Official Poe bots and user-created prompt bots using Open AI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta’s AI models do not train on your chats and cannot access your chats for anything other than to produce the requested LLM response
Third-party developer bots and apps can use your chats to train their AI models – even then, they don’t have access to the personal data associated with your Poe account unless you interact with other users in a group chat.
What happens when I delete my chats? How about when I delete my Poe account? Your chats and personal data associated with your account are deleted from Poe’s systems and will not be used for any other purpose. Visit the Poe Help Center to learn how to find these settings.
How long do your AI model provider partners retain my chats for? Each provider sets their own retention schedule (e.g. OpenAI and Anthropic retain your chats for 30 days). Please reach out to the AI model provider directly to learn more.
