Abstract

Louvre windows are used extensively in many buildings due to their ability to be open but still provide security. When opened, the louvres allow airflow through the building structure for thermal management. Sealing a louvre window is quite often problematic. A twin louvre bank window assembly for efficient thermal control, the assembly including an assembly surround frame including a head member, a sill member and at least a pair of opposed side channel members. A pair of louvre banks mounted relative to the assembly surround frame, each louvre bank including an outer louvre bank located towards an outer side of the assembly surround frame and one louvre bank located toward an inner side of the assembly surround frame. The outer and inner louvre banks including a plurality of louvre blades movable between a closed position and one or more open positions. The inner louvre bank seals when in its closed position. The openings of the louvre banks are provided in relation the outer louvre bank to allow pressure equalisation across the outer louvre bank when in its closed position.

Claims (22)

1. A twin louvre bank window assembly, the assembly including: an assembly surround frame including a head member, a sill member and at least a pair of opposed side channel members; a pair of louvre banks mounted relative to the assembly surround frame, including an outer louvre bank located towards an outer side of the assembly surround frame and an inner louvre bank located towards an inner side of the assembly surround frame, each of the outer and inner louvre banks including a plurality of louvre blades movable between a closed position and one or more open positions; wherein the inner louvre bank seals when in its closed position; and wherein one or more openings are provided in relation to the outer louvre bank so as to allow pressure equalisation across the outer louvre bank when in its closed position.
2. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the assembly surround frame includes a weatherseal mount, and the one or more openings are located in the weatherseal mount.
3. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein a resilient weatherseal strip is provided relative to the weatherseal mount, where a topmost louvre of the outer louvre bank seals against the resilient weatherseal strip when the outer louvre bank is moved into the closed condition.
4. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pair of louvre banks are mounted to the same assembly surround frame.
5. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the louvre blades in the outer louvre bank are at least partially opaque louvre blades and the louvre blades in the inner louvre bank are transparent louvre blades.
6. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the assembly surround frame includes a number of louvre bays with one or more intermediate mullion members extending substantially parallel to the side channel members separating the respective louvre bays from one another.
7. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the louvre blades in the inner louvre bank and the louvre blades in the outer louvre bank are manufactured from different materials.
8. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the inner louvre bank and the outer louvre bank are actuable to open and close independently of one another.
9. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the louvre blades in one of the respective inner louvre bank and outer louvre bank are staggered or offset from the louvre blades in the other of the respective inner louvre bank and outer louvre bank.
10. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, including at least one powered drive or motor associated with one or more of the louvre banks to drive at least some of the louvre blades of one or more of the louvre banks between the closed position and one or more open positions.
11. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 10, including a powered drive or motor associated with each louvre bank to drive the louvre blades in each of the inner and outer louvre banks between the closed position and one or more open positions.
12. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 10 or claim 11, including a window control system including a control unit operable to automatically control the at least one drive or motor.
13. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 12, wherein the control unit is configured to control the at least one drive or motor in a plurality of preset closed and open positions.
14. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 12 or claim 13, further including one or more sensors, and wherein the control unit is responsive to the one or more sensors to open or close one or more of the louvre banks to manage heat and/or ventilation in a building whilst preventing inclement weather from entering the building.
15. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein one or more of a temperature sensor, rain sensor, sun position sensor and a wind sensor are provided to control opening and/or closing of one or more of the louvre banks.
16. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 15, wherein the control unit is configured to cause the at least one drive mechanism to drive at least some of the louvre blades in response to a timer event.
17. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 16, further including at least one wireless communication device to allow communication with a compatible device operating a software application, and a software application operating on the compatible device, the software application allowing input of instructions to control the window assembly and communication to the control unit via the at least one wireless communication device of the control unit.
18. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in claim 17 wherein the control unit is provided or associated with a wall mounted input panel, switch or panel of switches for input of instructions to the control unit and/or a separate wall mounted input panel, switch or panel of switches is provided to issue instructions to the control unit.
19. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the louvres in at least one of the outer louvre bank and the inner louvre bank are configured to rotate more than 90° in opening and/or closing.
20. A twin louvre bank window assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the one or more openings are provided in relation to an upper portion of the outer louvre bank.
