Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods are disclosed for predicting one or more characteristics of a animal by applying computational methods to image(s) of the animal to generate one or more metrics indicative of the characteristics. Embodiments determine predictors of characteristics by creating a sample library of animals of a particular type, determining facial descriptor measurements for each animal, determining relationships between facial descriptor measurements and additional library data, and selecting predictors from these relationships. Other embodiments predict characteristics of animals not in the library and, optionally, categorising animals for particular discipline, training, management, care, etc. based on the characteristics. Other embodiments predict characteristics and determine strategies for group(s) of animals using predicted characteristics of individual animals. le library of animals of a particular type, determining facial descriptor measurements for each animal, determining relationships between facial descriptor measurements and additional library data, and selecting predictors from these relationships. Claims (3)

The claims defining the invention are as follows:
1. A method for transforming one or more digital images representing an animal into a predicted characteristic of the animal, comprising: 5 storing the one or more digital images representing the individual animal in a memory operably connected to a digital computer; annotating the one or more digital images with a plurality of reference points; computing, using trigonometric projection techniques, with the digital computer, facial descriptor points using the relative locations of a predetermined 10 subset of reference points, wherein a plurality of metrics using measurements are computed, derived from the plurality of reference points; computing, with the digital computer, a combined metric based on a predetermined function of a plurality of scale-free facial metrics comprising at least two of the following: a length metric, an area metric, an angle metric, and curvature 15 measures using relative locations of a predetermined subset of reference points and facial descriptor points; selecting a combination of the plurality of metrics for predicting the characteristic of the animal, selecting a subset of the plurality of metrics for predicting the characteristic of the animal using variable selection and dimension 20 reduction techniques; 64 predicting the characteristic of the animal based on the combined metric, wherein the characteristic relates to one or more of: temperament; cognitive ability; performance; suitability for a particular task, event, or environment; likelihood of displaying a specific type of pattern of 5 behavioral response; aggressiveness; dominance; competitiveness; social interaction in groups; and mothering ability; and providing the characteristic of the animal to an output device, wherein the characteristic is used to predict the personality of the animal and its effects on future measures of performance, behavior, or health. 10
2. A method for transforming one or more digital images representing an animal into a predicted characteristic of the animal substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any of the accompanying drawings.
3. An apparatus for transforming one or more digital images representing an animal into a predicted characteristic of the animal substantially as hereinbefore 15 described with reference to any of the accompanying drawings.
