Abstract

panel assembly (10) comprising at least one frame member (12) having a plurality of openings (16) spaced along one edge; a plurality of panels (14) each panel being elongate, at least partially hollow, and having internal walls, and each panel fitting into one of the openings; a corresponding fastening element (18) for connecting each panel to the frame member, the fastening element having a substantially constant cross section in its longitudinal direction; the frame member further having a mating portion oriented towards the said edge, wherein the fastening element has a frame engaging portion arranged to engage with the mating portion of the frame member and a panel engaging portion arranged to engage with the internal walls of the panel, the fastening element being sized such that the frame engaging portion is arranged to be inserted through one of the openings, wherein the panel engaging portion is arranged to provide a frictional force between the fastening element and the internal walls of the panel to impede relative movement of the fasting element and the panel. The invention provides a panel assembly that does not require additional fasteners and prevents cosmetic damage during assembly from being visible in the final assembled product.

Claims (14)

Claims
1. A panel assembly comprising at least one frame member and a plurality of panels, each one of the plurality of panels having a corresponding fastening element for connecting the one of the plurality of panels to the frame member, the fastening element having a ntially constant cross section in its longitudinal direction, the frame member having a plurality of openings spaced along one edge thereof, each one of the plurality of panels fitting into one of the plurality of openings, the frame member having a mating portion oriented towards the said edge; each of the plurality of panels being elongate and being at least partially , each of the plurality of panels having internal walls; the fastening element having a frame engaging portion arranged to engage with the mating portion of the frame member and a panel engaging portion arranged to engage with the internal walls of the one of the plurality of panels, the fastening element being sized such that the frame engaging portion is arranged to be inserted through one of the gs, wherein the panel engaging portion is arranged to provide a frictional force n the fastening element and the internal walls of the one of the ity of panels in order to impede relative movement of the fasting element and the one of the plurality of panels.
2. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the panel engaging portion acts against the one of the plurality of panels along a line lly perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of the one of the plurality of panels.
3. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each ing element includes a l body portion and the panel engaging portion comprises two g members which extend laterally of the central body portion.
4. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the bearing members are flanges each having an elongate outer edge arranged to bear against an internal wall of the one of the ity of panels.
5. A panel assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the mating portion of the frame member is comprised of longitudinally extending rails.
6. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 5, wherein the frame engaging portion of the fastening element is complementary in shape to an upper edge of the longitudinally extending rails.
7. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 6, wherein the longitudinally extending rails include internally facing clip portions located on the upper edges thereof.
8. A panel assembly as claimed in claim 7, wherein the fastening t es outwardly facing clip portions forming the frame engaging portion.
9. A panel ly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the panel assembly is a fence, a gate, or a balustrade.

A fastening element when used for connecting a panel to a frame member, the panel fitting into an opening of the frame member, the fastening element having a frame engaging portion ed to engage with a mating portion of the frame member, the frame engaging portion extending in a longitudinal direction, and a panel ng n arranged to engage with the internal walls of the panel, the panel ng portion extending in the longitudinal direction, the panel engaging portion being arranged to e a frictional force between the fastening element and internal walls of the panel in order to impede relative movement of the fasting element and the panel, wherein the fastening element has a ntially constant cross section in its longitudinal direction.
11. A fastening element as claimed in claim 10, wherein the fastening element es a central body portion and the panel engaging portion comprises two bearing members which extend lly of the central body portion.
12. A fastening element as claimed in claim 11, wherein the central body portion is a web.
13. A fastening element as claimed in claim 11 or 12, wherein the bearing s are flanges each having an elongate outer edge arranged to bear against an internal wall of the panel.
14. A fastening element as claimed in any one of claims 11 to 13, wherein the fastening t includes outwardly facing clip portions forming the frame engaging portion. 2 34 /24 24 44 4 22 34 22 34
