Abstract

The present technology is directed to a respiratory pressure therapy system, that includes a plenum chamber pressurisable to a therapeutic pressure above ambient air pressure, a seal-forming structure to form a seal with an entrance to the patient's airways to maintain said therapeutic pressure in the plenum chamber throughout the patient's respiratory cycle in use, a positioning and stabilising structure constructed and arranged to provide an elastic force to hold the seal-forming structure in a therapeutically effective position on the patient's head, a blower configured to generate the flow of air and pressurise the plenum chamber to the therapeutic pressure, the blower having a motor, the blower being connected to the plenum chamber such that the blower is suspended from the patient's head and the axis of rotation of the motor is perpendicular to the patient's sagittal plane, and a power supply configured to provide electrical power to the blower.

Claims (29)

1. A respiratory pressure therapy (RPT) system comprising: at least one housing portion at least partially defining a plenum chamber pressurisable to a therapeutic pressure of at least 6 cmH O above ambient air pressure; a seal-forming structure constructed and arranged to form a seal with a region of a patient’s face at or surrounding an entrance to the patient’s airways such that a flow of air at said therapeutic pressure is delivered to at least the entrance to the patient’s nares, the seal-forming structure constructed and arranged to maintain said therapeutic pressure in the plenum chamber throughout the patient’s respiratory cycle in use; a positioning and stabilising structure constructed and arranged to provide an elastic force to hold the seal-forming structure in a therapeutically effective position on the patient’s head, the positioning and stabilising structure comprising a tie, a lateral portion of the tie being constructed and arranged to overlie a region of the patient’s head superior to the otobasion superior in use, and a superior portion of the tie being constructed and arranged to overlie a region of the patient’s head in a region of the parietal bone in use, wherein the positioning and stabilising structure has a non- rigid decoupling portion; a blower configured to generate the flow of air at said therapeutic pressure and pressurise the plenum chamber to the therapeutic pressure, the blower having a motor, the blower being connected to the plenum chamber such that in use the blower is suspended from the patient’s head and an axis of rotation of the motor is generally perpendicular to the patient’s sagittal plane; and a power supply configured to provide electrical power to the blower, wherein the at least one housing portion comprises a vent assembly, the vent assembly comprising: a base having a first side and a second side and a passage through the base from the first side to the second side, the passage configured to allow the flow of air at said therapeutic pressure through the base from the first side to the second side; ResMed Ref: P1285NZ1 / JAWs Ref: 506229NZ at least one vent hole extension extending from the base and at least partially defining the passage; at least one vent hole passing through the at least one vent hole extension, the at least one vent hole configured to allow a vent flow of air to pass from the passage to atmosphere; and at least one flexible membrane attached to the at least one vent hole extension and extending into the passage, the at least one flexible membrane being configured to cover the at least one vent hole in a closed position to prevent the flow of air at said therapeutic pressure from being discharged from the passage to atmosphere, and the at least one flexible membrane being configured not to cover the at least one vent hole in an open position to allow the vent flow of air to be discharged to atmosphere from the passage.
2. The RPT system of claim 1, wherein the at least one vent hole extension includes an interior vent hole surface, each at least one vent hole passing through the interior vent hole surface to the passage.
3. The RPT system of claim 2, wherein the at least one flexible membrane is attached to the at least one vent hole extension at the interior vent hole surface.
4. The RPT system of claim 2 or 3, wherein the at least one vent hole extension includes an exterior vent hole surface, each at least one vent hole passing through the exterior vent hole surface to atmosphere.
5. The RPT system of claim 4, wherein the at least one vent hole extension further comprises an internal surface, and wherein the vent hole extension has a generally triangular cross-section formed by the interior vent hole surface, the exterior vent hole surface, and the internal surface.
6. The RPT system of any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the interior vent hole surface slopes downwardly into the interior of the vent assembly relative to the flow of air at said therapeutic pressure passing through the passage. ResMed Ref: P1285NZ1 / JAWs Ref: 506229NZ

The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the at least one vent hole extension further comprises two diametrically opposed vent hole extensions, wherein the at least one flexible membrane further comprises two flexible membranes, each of the two flexible membranes attached to a corresponding one of the two diametrically opposed vent hole extensions, and wherein the vent assembly further comprises a divider positioned between the two diametrically opposed vent hole extensions to form a first passage and a second passage.
8. The RPT system of claim 7, wherein the two flexible membranes do not contact the divider in the open position.
9. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the at least one flexible membrane is constructed of an elastically deformable material.
10. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the at least one flexible membrane is cantilevered to the at least one vent hole extension.
11. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the blower is contained at least partially within the plenum chamber.
12. The RPT system of claim 11, wherein the at least one housing portion comprises two housing portions that are at least partially separable to allow the blower to be removed from the plenum chamber.
13. The RPT system of claim 12, wherein the two housing portions are joined at one side in a clamshell arrangement to allow the plenum chamber to be opened and closed.
14. The RPT system of any one of claim 12 or claim 13, further comprising a sealing structure between the two housing portions.
15. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein at least one attachment structure extends from the plenum chamber to attach the positioning and stabilising structure to secure the RPT system to the patient’s head in use. ResMed Ref: P1285NZ1 / JAWs Ref: 506229NZ
16. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the plenum chamber comprises a port that is configured to be connected to at least one of a pressure transducer and a supplemental gas source.

The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein the seal-forming structure comprises: a pair of nasal puffs, or nasal pillows, each nasal puff or nasal pillow being constructed and arranged to form a seal with a respective naris of the nose of the patient; a seal-forming structure that forms a seal in use on a nose bridge region or on a nose-ridge region of the patient’s face and that forms a seal in use on an upper lip region of the patient’s face; or a seal-forming structure that forms a seal in use on a nose bridge region or on a nose-ridge region of the patient’s face and that forms a seal in use on a chin- region of the patient’s face.
18. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 17, further comprising a heat and moisture exchanger (HME) within the plenum chamber that is positioned in the flow of air at said therapeutic pressure and downstream of the blower.
19. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein the power supply comprises a battery, the battery further comprising at least one electrochemical cell.
20. The RPT system of claim 19, further comprising at least one wire supported by the positioning and stabilising structure, the at least one wire providing electrical communication between the blower and the battery.
21. The RPT system of claim 20, wherein the at least one wire is contained within the lateral portion of the tie.

The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein the seal-forming structure comprises an elastically deformable material that is less rigid than the plenum chamber, and ResMed Ref: P1285NZ1 / JAWs Ref: 506229NZ wherein a portion of the seal-forming structure substantially encloses the plenum chamber and the blower while allowing at least an inlet of the blower to remain exposed.
23. The RPT system of claim 22, wherein the seal-forming structure is shaped and dimensioned and the elastically deformable material of the seal-forming structure is selected to at least partially isolate the patient’s head from vibration and dampen sound generated by the blower in use.
24. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 23, further comprising a cover comprising an elastically deformable material that is less rigid than the plenum chamber that substantially encloses the plenum chamber and the blower while allowing at least an inlet of the blower to remain exposed.
25. The RPT system of claim 24, wherein the cover is shaped and dimensioned and the elastically deformable material of the cover is selected to at least partially isolate the patient’s head from vibration and dampen sound generated by the blower in
26. The RPT system of any one of claims 1 to 25, further comprising a control system to control the blower in use.
27. The RPT system of claim 26, wherein the control system comprises a flexible printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), the PCBA comprising a microprocessor.
28. The RPT system of claim 27, wherein the microprocessor is programmed to perform at least one of closed-loop pressure control based on sensed pressure data, flow rate estimation, and automatically adjusting expiration pressure relief.
29. The RPT system of any one of claims 26 to 28, wherein the control system further comprises a drive circuit to control the power supply separately from the blower.
