Abstract

Provided is a liquid spraying apparatus comprising a plurality of spray nozzle assemblies mounted along a liquid supply boom. The spray nozzle assemblies each include a one piece spray nozzle and retention cap (20) having an upstream cap section (21) and a downstream nozzle section (22), and an intermediate section (24) integral with the cap section. The cap section (21) is formed with internal camming and locking grooves for drawing the cap section into mounted position on a liquid inlet stem as an incident to rotation of the cap, and the nozzle section (22) has a liquid inlet passage (41) communicating with the inlet stem (12) for directing a discharging liquid spray. A pre-orifice insert (60) is mounted within the spray nozzle and retention cap (20) which has a smaller diameter nozzling passage section, and the intermediate section (24) of the one piece spray nozzle and retention cap (20) is formed with air passageways communicating between the pre-orifice liquid flow passage and outside ambient air. The liquid spraying apparatus provides a quick disconnect spray nozzle assembly with a specifically designed pre-orifice insert (60) mounted within the intermediate section (24) that in combination with a downstream expansion chamber (75) enhances liquid atomization and discharge of liquid particles.

Claims (7)

Claims:
1. A liquid spraying apparatus comprising: a spray boom for connection to a liquid supply; a plurality of spray nozzle assemblies mounted on the spray boom; said spray nozzle assemblies each including a liquid inlet stem having a central liquid passageway communicating through a side of the spray boom; said spray nozzle assemblies each including a one piece spray nozzle and retention cap having an upstream cap section and a downstream nozzle section, and an intermediate section integral with the cap section and nozzle section; said cap section being formed with camming and locking grooves for drawing the cap section onto said liquid inlet stem and into a locked position as an incident to rotation of the cap section onto the liquid inlet stem; said nozzle section having a liquid inlet passage communicating with said central liquid stem passageway of said liquid inlet stem when in said locked position for directing a liquid spray discharge from the nozzle section; wherein: said nozzle section for each said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap has a transverse chamber communicating with said nozzle section liquid inlet passage, said nozzle section having a plurality of said discharge orifices each defined by a respective cross slot in an end of said nozzle section communicating with said transverse chamber; a pre-orifice insert mounted disposed within said intermediate section of said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap having a pre-orifice central liquid flow passage communicating with said liquid inlet stem, said pre-orifice central liquid flow passage including a small diameter nozzling passage section for accelerating liquid flow to the nozzle section; said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap having a plurality of ambient air passages communicating between said pre-orifice central liquid flow passage downstream of said nozzling passage section of said pre-orifice insert and ambient air outside said spray nozzle and retention cap through which ambient air is drawn into liquid as an incident to passage of liquid through said pre-orifice small diameter nozzling section for facilitating liquid atomization upon discharge from said discharge orifice; said central flow passage of said pre-orifice insert includes a liquid inlet section communicating upstream with said nozzling passage section of said pre-orifice insert and a downstream outwardly opening conical discharge section communicating downstream with said nozzling passage section of said pre-orifice insert; and said nozzle section of said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap defines an expansion chamber downstream of said spray pre-orifice insert larger in diameter than the downstream outwardly opening conical discharge section of the pre-orifice insert that in turn communicates with said transverse chamber.
2. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 1 in which: an annular seal is disposed within said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap for positioning in sealed engagement with an end of said liquid inlet stem.
3. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 1 in which said cap section of said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap has a pair of outwardly extending diametrically opposed gripping ears to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the one piece spray nozzle and retention cap on the liquid inlet stem.
4. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 1 in which the intermediate section of the one piece spray nozzle and retention cap is defined in part by semi-cylindrical wall sections smaller in diameter than the cap section, and said nozzle section of said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap is an elongated rectangular member as viewed from a downstream end of the nozzle section extending outwardly from an end wall of the intermediate section.
5. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 1 including an annular seal disposed within said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap for positioning in sealed engagement with an end of said liquid inlet stem, and said pre-orifice insert has an enlarged diameter mounting flange interposed between said annular seal and said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap.
6. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 5 in which said ambient air passages communicate through said intermediate section.
7. The liquid spraying apparatus of claim 6 in which the pre-orifice insert and intermediate section of said one piece spray nozzle and retention cap define an annular chamber communicating between ambient air outside said spray nozzle and retention cap and said pre- orifice insert air passages.
