Abstract
method of treating a soft or hard capsule shell to reduce or alleviate stress in the capsule shell. The method includes a step of heating at least a portion of the soft or hard capsule shell to a temperature above a glass transition temperature of the capsule shell but below a melt temperature of the capsule shell for a time sufficient to reduce internal stress in the capsule shell. The method can be used to reduce cracking of hard or soft capsule shells by application of the heat treatment to the filled capsule shells after fabrication and filling.
Claims (12)
1. A method to reduce the propensity of cracking in a completed hard capsule shell that encapsulates a fill, comprising a step of: heating at least a portion of the completed hard capsule shell to a temperature above a glass tion temperature of the completed hard capsule shell but 2? - 10? below a melt temperature of the ted hard capsule shell, wherein the completed hard capsule shell comprises gelatin and has a weight ratio of plasticizer to gelatin of from 0 to 0.25.
2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the portion of the capsule shell is heated to 2-7 °C below the melt ature of the capsule shell.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the n of the capsule shell is heated to 2-3 °C below the melt temperature of the capsule shell.
4. The method according to any one of claims 1-3, wherein the completed hard capsule shell comprises a cap portion and a body n.
5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the portion of the completed hard capsule shell is the portion where the cap portion overlaps with the body portion of the capsule shell.
6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the portion of the completed hard capsule shell is the entire capsule shell.
7. The method ing to any one of claims 4-6, wherein the completed hard capsule shell is closed by fitting the cap portion of the hard capsule shell and the body portion of the hard capsule shell together.
8. The method according to any one of claims 1-7, wherein the time is from 2 seconds to 24 hours.
9. The method ing to any one of claims 1-8, wherein the time is from 12 hours to 24 hours.
10. The method according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein the time is from 2 s to 1 hour.
11. The method according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein the time is from 1 hour to 12 hours.
12. The method according to any one of claims 1-11, wherein the heating step is carried out at a relative humidity of less than 60%. 100 102-1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {3“} )\
