Abstract

The invention relates to a wetting composition comprising a surfactant selected from a non-ionic, cationic, anionic and amphoteric surfactant in combination with from 10 to less than 50 wt % of at least one C10 to C14 alcohol and 10 to 30 wt % of a C4-C6 oxygen containing co-solvent, to methods for using the wetting composition and products containing the wetting composition.

Claims (21)

THE CLAIMS NG THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. A wetting agent suitable for addition to an aqueous liquid to reduce the surface tension of the aqueous liquid, said wetting agent in the form of a composition consisting (a) from 10 to less than 50 wt % of one or more C10-C14 l; (b) 10 to 30 wt % of one or more C4-C6 oxygen containing co-solvent; (c) 20 to 60 wt % of one or more surfactant selected from a nic, cationic, anionic and amphoteric tant; (d) 0 to 25 wt % water; and (e) 0 to 10 wt % other additives.
2. The wetting agent according to claim 1, wherein the composition comprises from 10 to 35 wt % of one or more C10-C14 alcohol.
3. The wetting agent according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the ition comprises a C12 l.
4. The wetting agent ing to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the composition comprises a e of a C12 alcohol and a C14 alcohol.
5. The wetting agent according to claim 4, wherein the relative proportion of C12 alcohol to C14 alcohol in the mixture is in the range of from 50 : 50 to 90 : 10 by weight.
6. The wetting agent according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the composition comprises a mixture of a C12 alcohol and a C10 alcohol.
7. The g agent according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises from 10 to 25 wt% of one or more C4-C6 oxygen containing cosolvent.
8. The wetting agent according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises a C4-C6 oxygen containing co-solvent selected from C4-C6 water-soluble ls, C4-C6 water-soluble esters, C4-C6 water-soluble ethers, and mixtures thereof.
9. The wetting agent according to claim 8, wherein the C4-C6 oxygen containing cosolvent is selected from ethyl lactate, 2-butoxyethanol and diethylene glycol.
10. The wetting agent according to any one of the ing claims, n the composition comprises a surfactant selected from an alcohol late, an alkylbenzene sulfonate and a benzyl alkyl nary ammonium surfactant, and mixtures thereof.
11. The wetting agent according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises a surfactant mixture of an alcohol alkoxylate and an alkylbenzene sulfonate.
12. The wetting agent according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises up to 10 wt% water.
13. An aqueous liquid composition comprising an aqueous liquid to which the wetting agent of any one of claims 1 to 12 has been added.
14. The aqueous liquid composition of claim 13, wherein the aqueous liquid is water.
15. The aqueous liquid composition claim 13 or claim 14, wherein the aqueous liquid is an aqueous-based resin.
16. The aqueous liquid composition of claim 13 or claim 14, n the s liquid consists of or comprises an agricultural composition.
17. A method of lowering the surface tension of an s liquid, the method comprising the step of adding the wetting agent to any one of claims 1 to 12 to the aqueous liquid.
18. A method of wetting a low energy surface with a relatively high surface energy liquid, the method comprising the step of: adding the wetting agent according to any one of claims 1 to 12 to the ; and contacting the low energy surface with the liquid comprising the wetting composition.
19. A product having a low energy surface coated or impregnated with an aqueous liquid composition according to claim 13.
20. A resin composition comprising an aqueous resin to which the wetting agent according to any one of claims 1 to 12 has been added.
21. An agricultural ition comprising an aqueous agricultural composition to which the wetting agent according to any one of claims 1 to 12 has been added.
