Abstract

screw fastener for driving into a substrate, comprising a head and an elongated shank extending from the head, the shank comprising a first section proximate the head, a threaded second section, and a tapered portion connecting the first and the threaded second sections of the shank, wherein the first section is configured with a diameter greater than that of the second section; and one or more cutting edges defined substantially about a perimeter of a cutting region of the shank between the head and the threaded second section for providing a bore in the substrate corresponding to the diameter of the first section.

Claims (10)

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. A screw fastener for driving into a substrate to fasten a fitting to the substrate, the screw fastener comprising: a head having a washer form, whereby, in use, the head is configured to sit tight against the fitting when the screw fastener is fastened to the substrate; an elongated shank extending from the head, the shank comprising an unthreaded first section proximate the head, a threaded second section, and a tapered portion, wherein the first section is located directly beneath the head and configured with a diameter greater than that of the threaded second section, the diameter of the first section is substantially constant along its length, and the tapered portion is located intermediate the first section and the second section and connects the first section and the second section, whereby the shank tapers, in a direction of a longitudinal axis of the shank, from the diameter of the first section to the diameter of the second section; and a plurality of edges defined substantially about a perimeter of a region of the shank between the head and the threaded second section, whereby, in use, the plurality of edges is configured to provide a bore in the substrate corresponding to the diameter of the first section.
2. A screw fastener according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of edges is in the form of a plurality of boring edges for providing the bore in the substrate corresponding to the diameter of the first section.
3. The screw fastener according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of boring edges is in the form of a plurality of cutting edges for providing the bore in the substrate corresponding to the diameter of the first section.
4. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the plurality of edges are spaced equally about the perimeter of the region of the shank between the head and the threaded section for providing the bore in the substrate corresponding to the diameter of the first section.
5. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the region is defined by adjacent parts of the first section and the tapered portion.
6. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said region is located at a part of the tapered portion adjacent the first section.
7. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 6, further comprising a flute extending towards the head from the plurality of edges.
8. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the angle of the tapered portion with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank is about 30 degrees.
9. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein an end portion of the shank is configured with a self-drilling tip.
10. The screw fastener according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the fastener is configured for use with timber.
