Abstract

catheter assembly comprises a catheter, a needle having a sharp distal tip disposed in the catheter, a catheter hub housing the catheter and the needle. A clip disposed in the needle shield cooperates with the needle , wherein the clip engages the catheter hub in the first position of the needle, and the clip disengages the catheter hub via a notch when the needle is retracted to a second position to enclose at least a portion of the needle. The clip is mounted in an outer housing of the needle shield via a spade (66) having an outer wall (70) exposed to the outside of the needle shield, in order to reduce the overall width of the needle shield.

Claims (19)

1. A catheter assembly comprising: a catheter; a needle having a distal tip, and disposed in the catheter; a catheter hub connected to the catheter and the needle; a needle shield configured to be connected to the catheter hub; and a clip disposed in the needle shield that cooperates with the needle, the clip including a spade that attaches the clip to the needle shield, wherein an outer surface of the spade is exposed to an outside of the catheter assembly.
2. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein an inner wall of the spade includes one or more barbs.
3. The catheter assembly of claim 2, wherein the one or more barbs engage an inner surface of the needle shield.
4. The catheter assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the inner wall is secured to the needle shield.
5. The catheter assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the spade includes an outer wall that is exposed to the outside of the needle shield.
6. The catheter assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the outer surface of the spade faces outside of the needle shield.
7. The catheter assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the clip further includes: ~ 24 ~ a first leg; and a second leg angularly connected to the first leg; and the first leg includes the spade configured in a substantially U-shape.
8. The catheter assembly of claim 7, wherein the spade includes an angled lead-in portion.
9. The catheter assembly of claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the spade is disposed at a distal end of the first leg.
10. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the clip includes: a first leg having a first flag, a foot and a latch; a second leg angularly connected to the first leg; the foot is disposed between the first and second legs; the latch is configured to engage the catheter hub such that the latch engages the catheter hub in the first position of the needle; the latch disengages the catheter hub when the needle is retracted to a second position to enclose at least a portion of the needle; the first position of the needle biases the first leg toward the second leg of the clip into an open position during needle use; and the second position of the needle allows the clip to move to a closed position to block the distal tip of the needle by the first flag and the second flag when the needle is retracted after needle use.
11. The catheter assembly of claim 10, wherein the first flag includes the foot and the foot includes the latch.
12. The catheter assembly of claim 10, wherein the foot extends outwardly from the first flag. ~ 25 ~
13. The catheter assembly of any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein the foot extends away from the first and second legs.
14. The catheter assembly of claim 10, wherein the foot is substantially perpendicular to the first leg; and the latch is substantially perpendicular to the foot.
15. The catheter assembly of any one of claims 10 to 14, wherein the latch is disposed between the first and second legs.
16. The catheter assembly of claim 10, wherein: the second leg includes a second flag; and the first flag extends from the first leg toward the second leg, the second flag extends from the second leg toward the first leg, and the first and second flags are disposed between the first and second legs.
17. The catheter assembly of claim 16, wherein: the first flag and the second flag are disposed on separate and parallel planes.
18. The catheter assembly of claim 10, wherein: the first leg is disposed on a first plane; the second leg is disposed on a second plane; and the foot and the latch are disposed between the first and second planes.
19. The catheter assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein: the distal tip is exposed in a first needle position; ~ 26 ~ the distal tip is enclosed by the clip in the needle shield in a second needle position; and the spade connects the clip to the needle shield in the first position and in the second position.
