Abstract
coupling system comprising a coupler (10) for use in concrete construction and at least one threaded reinforcing bar, the coupler comprising an asymmetric internal thread (18, 28) for engagement with an external thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein the internal thread of the coupler does not match the thread of the reinforcing bar. When the bar is engaged in the coupler and tightened against the coupler's stop (32), the crest of the thread of the bar will engage with the acute outer flank (24), creating frictional engagement between the outer flank of the coupler and the crest adjacent to the outer flank of the bar. This contact will be more like a line contact rather than a face contact. When this frictional engagement occurs, and the assembly is tightened further by torque, the crest will be pushed further into this ramp locking it in place.
Claims (6)
1. A coupling system comprising a coupler for use in concrete construction and at least one threaded reinforcing bar, the coupler comprising an asymmetric internal thread for engagement with an external thread of the reinforcing bar, wherein a thread form of the internal thread has a taper which narrows toward an outer end of the coupler such that the external thread is wedged into engagement with the internal thread when the reinforcing bar is driven into abutment within the coupler, and wherein a thread profile of the internal thread does not match a thread profile of the external thread.
2. A coupling system according to claim 1, wherein the outer flank of the internal thread slopes from a crest of the internal thread at a more acute angle to a longitudinal plane than an inner flank of the internal thread.

A coupling system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each turn of the internal thread has a taper which narrows toward an outer end of the fitting such that each turn of the thread of the reinforcing bar within the coupler is wedged simultaneously when the reinforcing bar is driven into abutment within the coupler.

A coupling system according to any one of claims 1 to 3, comprising two threaded reinforcing bars, wherein the coupler comprises an asymmetric internal thread for engagement with an external thread of each of the reinforcing bars, and thread profiles of the internal threads do not match the thread profile of the thread of the corresponding reinforcing bar.
5. A coupling system according to claim 4, wherein each of the internal threads has an outer flank which slopes from a crest of the internal thread at a more acute angle to a longitudinal plane than an inner flank of the internal thread.
6. A coupling system according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the internal threads extend inwardly from respective opposite ends of the coupler, and are separated at their inner ends by an internal stop. 25326674.1:DCC-
