Abstract
Surfactants for use in formulations and processes suitable for hydrocarbon recovery. These formulations, include formulations suitable for fracking, enhancing oil and or gas recovery, and the recovery and/or production of bio-based oils.
Claims (12)
1. A method of recovering a hydrocarbon comprising the steps of: introducing a foamed fluid composition within an oil or gas well and performing an operation with the foamed fluid composition wherein the foamed composition comprises: a base fluid comprising: an oil-based or a water-based fluid; a gas, at least one surfactant of Formula I, wherein R and R are the same or different, and are selected from hydrogen and C1-C6 alkyl that is optionally substituted with one or more substituents selected from hydroxyl, amino, amido, sulfonyl, sulfonate, carbonyl, carboxyl, and carboxylate; n is an integer from 2 to 5; m is an integer from 9 to 20; the terminal nitrogen is optionally substituted with R , wherein R is selected from hydrogen, oxygen, hydroxyl, and C -C alkyl that is optionally substituted with one or more substituents selected from hydroxyl, amino, amido, sulfonyl, sulfonate, carbonyl, carboxyl, and carboxylate; and an optional counterion associated with the surfactant which, if present, is selected from chloride, bromide, iodide, and hydroxide.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the operation is selected: a gas lift operation, a drilling operation, a completion operation, a stimulation operation, a fracturing operation, an injection operation, an enhanced oil recovery operation, and combinations thereof.
3. The method of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein n is 5.

The method of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the surfactant comprises at least one of 6-(dodecyloxy)-N,N,N-trimethyloxohexanaminium iodide, having the following formula: dodecyl 6-(dimethylamino)hexanoate N-oxide, having the following formula: 6-(dodecyloxy)-N,N-dimethyloxohexanaminium chloride, having the following formula: 4-((6-(dodecyloxy)oxohexyl)dimethylammonio)butanesulfonate, having the following formula: ; and 6-(dodecyloxy)oxohexanaminium chloride, having the following formula:
5. The method of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the gas is air, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or methane.
6. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the water based fluid is water, brine, an oil in water emulsion or an oil in brine emulsion.
7. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the oil based fluid is a water immiscible fluid selected from diesel, mineral oil, esters, refinery cuts and blends or alpha-olefins.

The method of claim 7, wherein the oil based fluid is a synthetic based fluid selected from olefin oligomers of ethylene, esters made from vegetable fatty acids and alcohols, ethers and polyethers made from alcohols and polyalcohols, paraffinic or aromatic hydrocarbons, alkyl benzenes and terpenes.
9. The method of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the base fluid is a drilling fluid, a completion fluid, a stimulation fluid, a fracturing fluid or an injection fluid.

The method of claim 9, wherein the base fluid is a completion fluid and the completion fluid is a brine formed from sodium chloride, calcium chloride, zinc chloride, potassium chloride, potassium bromide, sodium bromide, calcium bromide, zinc bromide, sodium formate, potassium formate, ammonium formate, cesium formate and mixtures thereof.
11. The method of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the gas is carbon dioxide and the method improves oil recovery from the well by miscible gas flooding.
12. The method of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the hydrocarbon is gas or oil and an emulsion is formed with the gas or oil.
