Abstract

Disclosed is the use of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester for treating or preventing a cardiovascular disease in a subject on statin therapy having type 2 diabetes, wherein the treating or preventing comprises administering to the subject the medicament comprising a dose of about 4g of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester per day, wherein the cardiovascular disease is myocardial infarction, stroke, or both.

Claims (14)

WE CLAIM:
1. Use of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester in the manufacture of a medicament for treating or preventing a cardiovascular disease in a subject on statin therapy having type 2 diabetes, wherein the treating or preventing comprises administering to the subject the medicament comprising a daily dose of about 2,500 to about 10,000 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester per day, wherein the cardiovascular disease is myocardial infarction, stroke, or both.
2. The use of claim 1, wherein the statin therapy is stable statin therapy.
3. The use of claim 2, wherein the statin is selected from lovastatin, mevastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, fluvastatin, atorvastatin, and simvastatin.
4. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject does not exhibit an increase in low density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C) levels after administration of the medicament as compared to baseline or placebo control.
5. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject has fasting baseline triglyceride levels between about 150 mg/dl to about 500 mg/dl.
6. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject exhibits a reduction in triglycerides levels by at least 30% after administration of the medicament.
7. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject exhibits a reduction in triglycerides levels by at least 40% after administration of the medicament.
8. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject exhibits a reduction in triglycerides levels by at least 50% after administration of the medicament.
9. The use of claim 1, wherein the about 2,500 to about 10,000 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester is administered to the subject in 4 capsules.
10. The use of claim 9, wherein the capsules each comprises about 1g of eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester.
11. The use of claim 1, wherein the medicament is administered to the subject in 1 to 4 dosage units per day.
12. The use of claim 1, wherein the medicament comprises at least about 90%, by weight of all fatty acids present, eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester.
13. The use of claim 1, wherein the subject has atherosclerosis.
14. The use according to any one of claims 1 to 13, substantially as herein described with reference to any example thereof.
