LEONARD WOODS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TROUSERS-SUPP ORTER.
Application filed April 9, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD l/Voons, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trousers supporters, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter described and claimed[ The object of my invention is to provide a device capable of being attached to the shirt of the wearer at convenient points near the waist line and adapted to engage the trousers in order to support them in turn from the shirt.
In the accompanying drawing on which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts,
Figure 1 represents a face view of my device in its preferred form;
Fig. 2, a top view of the same; and
Fig. 3, a diagrammatic view showing the method of engaging the shirt;
My device herewith illustrated belongs to the class of trousers supporters that are adapted to fit between the trousers and shirt of the wearer and be supported at or near the waist line, and are adapted to engage the trousers and in turn support them; but my device while it may be used with a belt is especially adapted to receive its support by engagement with the shirt of the wearer, and then in turn to be engaged with the trousers at or near the band.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows the preferred form of my device comprising a thin plate preferably curved to fit the wearer as indicated in Fig. 2, and designed to be stamped out of sheet metal and suitably bent. 1 designates a central downwardly converging slot at the bottom of an opening 2, surrounded by a band 3 of rectangular or other shape and preferably provided at the top with a bent-over lip 1 designed to fit over the top of the waist band indicated by the dashed line. Below the slot 1 is a similar upwardly converging slot 5 centrally located on the vertical line. These slots terminate in a narrow slit adapted to grip a portion of the shirt that is pulled forward and pressed therein to effect a gripping engagement and maintain the device in the desired position. Such engagement is indicated by Fig. 3 in which the plate allows Specification of Letters Patent.

a portion of the shirt to be drawn through the opening 2 and gripped by the slit 1; the plate is then turned upward about its bottom edge as a center to the position shown thereby taking a fold of the shirt around under the bottom edge and upward in front of the plate with the tip on the inside of the plate gripped by the slit 1. The loop thus formed in the shirt supports the plate at or near the waist line and the buttons on the inside of the trousers band can be readily slipped into the lateral pockets 6 about midway between the top and bottom of the plate. These pockets are preferably provided with guard tips 7 formed by a cap portion of the plate extended over the respective pockets so as to form a shoulder in the zig-zag entrance to the pocket. The buttons will not accidentally slip from the pockets when the band is opened but when desired to disengage the buttons they are brought nearer together and will then readily leave the pockets. When inserting the buttons they are brought nearer together by making a slight fullness in the band, slipped into the pockets by the zigzag entrances when the fullness of the band is released and the buttons take their normal positions apart.
It is evident from the diagrammatic view Fig. 3 that the slot 1 is suflicient to maintain the tip of the material engaged as above described. The lower slot 5, however, tends to draw together and to grip the material at the bottom edge of the plate and to obviate accidental disengagement of the plate from the shirt when the buttons are disengaged from the pockets. The location of the pockets also, at or near the horizontal center line, distributes the downward pull of the trousers and tends to maintain the plate in its vertical position against the body.
The plate is in duplicate or triplicate if desired and it may be engaged at any point around the waist, so as to engage the inside buttons of the trousers usually located for suspender attachment; the buttons may be located opposite the hip joint on each side or elsewhere if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A trousers supporter comprising a thin plate having a central notch adapted to rip a portion of the shirt and maintain the plate in a loop of the shirt substantially as described, and having pockets laterallydisposed adapted to receive-inside buttons on the trousers band and thus in turn support said trousers; I
2. 'A trousers supporter comprising athin plate provided with a centrally disposed gripping slot converging downward, a similar gripping slot at the bottom edge converging upward, and laterally disposed pocketshaving guard shoulders,"all substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. 'The hereindescribed trousers supporter comprising a thin plate having gripping slots converging in opposite directions vertically and-lateral pockets with the buttons substantially mid-way of said plate for maintaining the vertical position of the plateunder the pull of trousers buttons en- ,g,g-aged by said pockets substantially as deplate having a centrally disposed downward converging slot, a depending lip at the top adapted to engage the upper edge of a trousers 'band, and laterally disposed pockets near the middle of said plate for further engagement with buttons on 'said trousers band substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I'have afiixed my signature in thepresenee'oftwo witnes e 30 EEON'ARD WOODS. Witnesses H. M. PLAIsTnD, ADNUL Hones.
