WINDOW-SASH STARTER.

'lhis invention relates to devices for starting and lilfting window sashes and is particularly adapted to be applied to windows :for railway passsenger cars, dwellings and the like.
liciuch diliiculty is generally experienced in raising slidable window sashes due to sticking', and after they have been lett undisturbed for a time in a lowered position.
An object oiA the invention is to provide a practical device for eliectively overcoming this diiliculty and which may be readily attached to a slidable window sash to provide improved means whereby a power i'ul force may be easily applied for prying and moving the sash.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which comprises few and simple parts, which is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and is efficient in operation to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
Certain features herein shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my cti-pending application Serial No. 730,388 tiled August 6th, 1924.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing, indicates in general a window starting and liiting device embodying the invention which may be attached in any convenient Serial No. 34,279.

ard construction and is seen to include the usual linger lever 12a which actuates the disengagement of a latch 12b with a tooth raclt 13 on an upright 14a of the window frame 14 in the well known manner.
The device 15 may comprise a casing 1G having means oi" suitable construction to firmly secure the device to the sash such as ear 15a and holes 15b adapted to receive screws 17. Pivotally mounted on the casing 16 is a hand lever 18 having the handle end 18"L extending along the exterior side thereof, said lever having a recess on its under side, as at 18b for receiving the fingers of the operator. The pivoted end 18c of said lever projects through to the in terior of the casing 16 and is constructed to support a sector gear member 19 having gear teeth 19a as shown in Fig. 4. The portion 18d of the lever end 18c on which the member 19 is mounted is preferably made to have a non-circular cross-section and is shaped to snugly lit into a similar shaped hole 19b in the gear member 19 so that the latter is actuated on movement of the lever 18.
For holding the gear member 19 on the lever end 18C, a washer 20 seated in a recess 19c of said member 19 is provided, said washer being secured to a stub projection 18e which may be riveted over to hold the washer 20 and gear member 19 against displacement, as shown in Fig. 4.
Engaging the teeth 19a of gear 19, is a rack 21a preferably formed integral with a sliding plunger' bolt 21. On swinging the lever 18 -from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to that shown in dotted lines, the plunger bolt 21 is caused to move out ot the casing 16 to the position shown in dotted lines. Suitable stop means such as a lug 22 may be provided for limiting the movement or downward throw of the gear member 19, and a suitable guide projection 23 extending from the casing may be provided` for preventing the plunger boltJ Q1 from accidental displacement from its proper path of movement.
In using the invention with the parts positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the spring stop latch 12 is released and at the same time the lever 18 is lifted. The latter operation is ettective to apply a direct force to raise the Window sash and to simultaneously4 provide apoiverfnl prying action of the plunger bolt 21 on the sill 1-11 ot the Window `trame let` for moving the sash 11 with respect to said frame. i
Releasing the lever 1 8 returns the parts to their normal retracted position shown in full linesin Fie". 3 and the Window may be left manl opened or closed position as desired. lf the Window is lett closed the device is again ready for operation in the manner above described.
